2 What is Ethics? Ethics : from Greek word ethikos, meaning ‘character’. Refers to customary way to behave in society Morality : from Latin word moralis, concerned with which actions are right and which are wrong Today terms are used interchangeably

3 What is Ethics? Ethics deals with moral choices – choices that we make that reflect our values. The choices themselves are called ‘moral choices’. We use the term ‘moral choice’ to mean any choice in accordance with our moral values, whether we applaud or condemn the particular decision.

4 When are we considered to be making an ethical decision? 1. You must believe your ethical decision is right and be prepared to justify it as such. 2. The interests of someone other than yourself must be involved. 3. You must act of your own free will 4. Your action must be deliberate

5 Ethical Rules Most of us are brought up to follow certain ethical rules, to behave in ways which are considered by the society we live in, to be acceptable. List some examples of moral rules that you were brought up with.

6 Which argument do you find the most persuasive and why? Death Penalty a. Is moral because it’s how my society has decided is the best way to deter and to punish murder. b. Is immoral because errors can happen and there’s no going back. c. Is moral because my family welcomed the revenge and closure after the murder of my brother.

7 Which argument do you find the most persuasive and why? Terrorism a. Is acceptable because terrorists think of themselves as freedom fighters. b. Is immoral because innocent human beings are killed. c. Is immoral because I am still in grief over my brother, killed in a terrorist attack.

8 Which argument do you find the most persuasive and why? Female Genital Mutilation a. Is moral because it is a cultural practice, and different cultural practices should be respected. b. Is immoral because I would not want my daughter to undergo it. c. Is immoral because it inflicts pain on girls and removes potential for pleasure.
