E G S Energy, Education, Governance and Schools. A European school panel for involving local communities in energy efficiency programs

Focus on: Energy saving and energy efficiency actions Trainings for teachers Educational contents for students Relations and synergies among schools and others stakeholders (local communities, public administrations, universityes, enterprises,…)

Project Summary A network of 13 bottom-up school poles involving families, local Administrations, SMEs, training institutions, environmental and energy agencies, public and private financial actors and all relevant stakeholders in 10 different countries. (IT, PT, NL, SK, F, FIN, BG, DE, RO, AT) At least 39 new energy projects Manifesto for energy efficiency in schools Communities

Background EGS starts from the need to involve local communities in tackling energy issues and improving energy efficiency. The main actor contributing to involve a whole community and at the same time training the younger generations is school, and more specifically high-schools The project focuses on 4 main levels: developing new educational contents for pupils, teachers training, involvement of the local productive sector (SMEs), governance. The main outputs will be: A website, www.egs-project.eu, localized in 13 linguages an energy manifesto for schools, energy management and audits in schools, training for pupils and teachers and a collection of at least 39 new energy projects out of which each school forum will implement one pilot activity that will be monitored and evaluated during the project life

Objectives To define the actual framework of implementation of energy efficiency in schools To strengthen the internal capacities of the schools To valorise the schools role in policy making To make schools capabilities available for the local communities To increase the local communities participation in the energy efficiency process To start concrete pilot actions To allow a monitoring and evaluation process for pilot actions during and after the project To increase the number of schools participating in the network To stimulate the EGS partner and other stakeholders cooperation for new activities

Main steps The first action will be defining the actual framework of the implementation of energy efficiency at school, being a necessary knowledge base for successive activities and will lead to a census report of best practices. A Manifesto for the energy efficiency in the schools communities will be prepared and The courses for schools staff and for students will be organised. The core of the project will be then the involvement of local actors in participated educational and innovation processes on 4 levels: educational programmes, teachers training, involvement of the local productive sector (SMEs) and governance for the involvement of families, Local Administrations and all relevant stakeholders. Each of the 13 fora will produce and action plan with at least 3 feasibility plan for the main tasks and will implement 1 pilot actions that will be monitored and evaluated The international added value will be the common creation of the action plans and the constant exchange of experiences.

Expected results Energy Surveys at 6 partner schools + 7 from other partner countries + 3 from 10 participant countries (40-45 in total) 13 Training courses for schools staff (at least 15 participants each one) 13 Integrated school courses for students (at least 100 students each one) 13 Energy management systems for schools Increasing the energy management capabilities of the schools: energy consumption reduction of about 15% taking into consideration the yearly thermal trend and/or green energy supply, etc 13 school Forums and 13 action plans: each action plan containing at least 5 community projects Feasibility studies for projects selected by the forums: 39 feasibility in total Activation of at least 13 Pilot actions (at least one for each forum) and monitoring National and International network enlargement: 5 other EU countries Communication with 10.000 families in each participant community: 130.000 families in total A Manifesto for energy efficiency in schools Communities International cooperation agreement
