1. “Grammar to Explain”
부정사가 형용사 역할을 할 때는 일반 형용사처럼 한정 용법과 서술 용법이 있다. 부정사가 앞에 나온
명사나 대명사를 꾸며주는 경우는 한정 용법이며, be동사 나 seem이나 appear등의 동사 뒤에서 보어적
으로 쓰이면 서술 용법이다. be동사 뒤에 오는 특수 용법은 제4과에서 다룬다.
한정 용법
Neil Armstrong was the first man to land on the moon. 동사의 주어 관계
(=Neil Armstrong was the first man who landed on the moon.)
How could he make money when he had nothing to sell? 타동사(sell)의 목적어 관계
The future will be a lonely place to live in because of computers.
(=The future will be a lonely place in which to live......) 전치사(in)의 목적어 관계
We need more effective ways to ensure that every citizen can fully exercise the right to secure
private information. ... The capacity to store and distribute information has increased through the use
of computers and other devices. 그 밖의 수식 관계
다음 과에서 다룰 <Be+to부정사>의 경우와 부정사가 불완전자동사의 보어가 되는 경우에
부정사는 서술적 용법 형용사(구) 역할을 한다.
I can't remember how old I am, but I seem to remember my birthdays without any problem.
(=It seems that I remember that I'm tired)
Your guess appears to be right. (=It appears that your guess is right.)
The rumor turned out [proved] to be false.
(=It turned out [proved] that the rumor was true.) 시제의 일치에 유념!
