5 Collaborative Planning Time Build regular and sufficient time for collaborative planning into the school schedule Identify a facilitator/group leader for each team Create accountability for using the time well

6 Collaborative Planning Time Create a shared goal by the group: collaborate to improve each person’s teaching Create a culture of self- reflection, support, and high expectations for students and staff Create a system where teachers can regularly visit each other’s classes to observe, share, and critique Use CPT to discuss student work and formative assessment data in order to adjust instruction

8 Activity: What teachers need and reformers ignore: time to collaborate Read the following article and discuss the following questions with your group: Do you think teacher collaboration will help students achieve at higher levels? Is CPT necessary? What structure will you, as the leader, need to ensure to make CPT effective?

9 Collaborative Team Planning Time Checklist – Principal Edition To be effective, collaborative planning time needs well- designed structures and content. Depending on current practice, this may necessitate establishing or changing expectations around what collaborative planning time is and how it should be used by teacher teams. The following checklist can help you evaluate your current collaborative planning time program and potentially identify areas where it could be improved.

11 Activity: DesignCheck for CPT DesignCheck Framework for Collaborative Planning Time – A. Collaborate with your table partners to highlight phrases/sentences that most accurately describe your school in yellow – B. Highlight areas that are particularly challenging at your school – C. Come back as a whole group to discuss

12 Ideas for Collaboration 1. Build an online resource database 2. Start a reading group 3. Put time in the schedule for teachers to collaborate on lesson plans and rubrics 4. Allow effective veteran teachers to mentor new teachers 5. Team-teach/model by taking over in your area of strength. 6. Create a social media page or other social media community just for your school 7. Pick a “teacher of the month” to highlight 8. Build the master schedule to observe colleagues in action
