Unit 11: Sources of energy

Look at these pictures

Use pictures above to complete these sentences: 1. We use ______ to turn turbines. 2. We use ______ to run machine, cars, motorbikes. 3. We use ______ to make electricity. => 1. Wind power 2. oil/ petrol 3. coal, wind/ water/sun power

1. What is our major source of energy ? 2. Is this major source limited ? Why ? 3. How many sources of energy are mentioned in the text ? 4. Which one do you think is the alternative source of energy ?

Vocabularies: - Alternative (adj): that can be used instead of something else: thay thế. Ex: There is a vegetarian alternative on the menu every day. - Reserve (n): supply of something that is kept to be used if it is needed: sự dự trữ. Ex: $10 million in cash reserves. - Infinite (adj): very great; impossible to measure => syn: boundless: vô tận Ex: An infinite variety of plants.

- To exhaust (v): to run out of, to weaken, to empty: làm kiệt quệ => synonym: exhausted Ex: A full day's teaching exhausts me. - Release (v): let sb/sth free: phóng thích Ex: Large amounts of energy are released by the sun everyday. - Limited (adj): not very great in amount or extent: có hạn. Ex: We are doing our best with the limited resources available.

StatementsTrueFalse 1. Our major sources of energy, fossil fuels are limited and exhausted. 2. There are six alternative sources of energy mentioned in the passage. 3. Geothermal heat is available every where in the world. 4. Alternative sources have both advantages and disadvantages. 5. The potential of alternative sources of energy is enormous. Task 1: True or False statements

Work in pairs and read the text silently then answer the guided questions. 1- What is our major source of energy ? 2- Is this major source limited ? Why ? 3- How many sources of energy are mentioned in the text? 4- Which one do you think is the most potential energy of all the alternative sources of energy?

Answers: 1. Our major source of energy is fossil fuels (oil, coal, natural gas). 2. Yes, It is limited. Because our demand is increasing very quickly and fossil fuels will be exhausted within a relative short time. 3. They are fossil fuels, nuclear energy, geothermal heat, solar energy, wind power, water power. 4. I think solar energy is the most potential energy of all the alternative sources of energy.

Sources of energy AdvantagesDisadvantages Nuclear power Solar energy Water power Wind power Geothermal heat Task 2: Table completion Possibleavailable unlimitedvery dangerous plentiful, infinite, clean, safe possible in the day time clean and unlimited expensive No wind => no energy clean and unlimited

Complete the summary of the reading passage by filling each blank with a suitable word. We need energy to live and work. Our major source of energy comes from (1)________. It consists of (2)________, oil and (3)________. These sources are running out so people develop (4)________ sources such as solar energy, (5)________, water power, (6)________, and geothermal (7)________. All of them have advantages and disadvantages. Task 3: Gap - filing

The advantage of solar energy is that it is not only plentiful and (8)________ but also clean and safe. Geothermal heat and nuclear power are (9)_________ sources of energy. They give us electricity. Besides they are (10)________. Answers: 1. fossil fuels 6. wind energy 2. coal 7. heat 3. natural gas 8. infinite 4. new 9. alternative 5. nuclear energy10. dangerous
