Hello! I am a chess board and now I am going to tell you the story of my life. I remember being shaped by machines and robots in the factory. It was some time in 2009. Hundreds of us were made in one lot. My brothers, sisters and parents, all of us lived happily for some days. But then the time came when we were to be distributed.
On the day of the distribution, the word ‘STAUTON’ was embossed on our backs and we were off to spend our lives on our own. We were shipped to a place called Wijk in Netherlands. The tournament where we were to be used was called “Tata Steel” or “Wijk Aan Zee”. Unfortunately, I was amongst the few extra boards and wasn’t used. For the next three years I roamed around the globe in various Grandmaster Tournaments. But all this was in vain as I always was the extra board. But I didn’t know that my luck was about to sparkle.
Once, when I was in Moscow, I heard from the organizers that I was to be used. My soul was delighted. At last! I was to be used. On the day of my usage, I was loaded on to a special truck. I was feeling that it was my special ride to my destiny. When I was unloaded from the truck, I found myself in an art gallery. A lot of eyes came on me. I didn’t know why I was getting such special attention. I had a laugh in my mind with the thought that all that was for my grand welcome to the Chess world.
I was placed on a wooden table with a clean cloth laid on it. That moment I had a VERY bad thought. That I was made into a show piece. But the next moment, hundreds of journalists entered taking pictures of me and then, Vishwanathan Anand, World Chess Champion entered the gallery, closely followed by Boris Gelfand his challenger. THE WORLD CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP was to be played on me. I was delighted.
I suddenly started getting lots of attention. This continued for about a month. One day when the match was over suddenly everyone started clapping. I was confused for a moment. Then I understood that Anand was champion again. I was happy because I thought that I have become very popular and I would be used in many tournaments. But I was just building castles in the air.
Once the tournament was over, I was denied of attention. I was kept in a stupid showcase next to some painting in the art gallery. For some days, I was cleaned daily and got some attention. But now I lie in this dusty showcase denied of attention. I wish I could get my former glory back. !!
