1 Imagery, Foreshadowing, Symbolism Important Literary Devices

2 Imagery Imagery in creative writing is how one or more of the reader's senses respond to words, descriptions, and languages. It's used to paint vivid pictures in the minds of readers, listeners. Imagery places the reader in the scene, poem, if well written. An author creates imagery through using similes and metaphors. – Metaphors: Metaphors finds a similarity between two unrelated things. John is a beast on the football field. – Similes: Similes compare two things that are not alike, except in one way. Like or as is used when working with similes. Her skin is as white as snow. 3 Foreshadowing Literary device in which an author hints certain plot developments that perhaps will come to be later in the story. – The mockingjay in The Hunger Games. This is a “thing” that survived despite the Capitol’s intentions—just like Katniss. – Katniss is “the girl on fire” which is essentially what she does for the Districts after she wins the Hunger Games.

4 Symbolism A figure of speech where an object, person, or situation has another meaning other than its literal meaning. – Symbolism is found in colors: Black is used to represent death or evil. White stands for life and purity. Red can symbolize blood, passion, danger, or immoral character. Blue represents peacefulness and calm. Sometimes metaphors are used to represent symbolism. – Time is money: This is symbolic because it warns you that when you spend your time, you are giving up the opportunity to be doing something else with that time (just as when you spend your money, you give up your chance to do something else with the money). Further, like money, time is not infinite. – Life is a roller-coaster: This is symbolic because it indicates that there will be ups and downs in life that you have to weather.
