Piedmont/Mountains Piedmont—gently rolling land between ocean and mountains Mountains—areas of very high land Georgia—Blue Ridge Mountains Appalachian Mountains

Wetlands (aka swamps and marshes) Wetlands—low land covered by water most of the year Swamp—wetland where mostly trees and other woody plants grow—usually fresh water

Wetlands (cont) Georgia’s Okefenokee Swamp is the largest freshwater swamp in North America. Marsh—wetland where mostly soft stemmed plants and grasses grow— usually salt water

Oceans (cont) Barrier island—a sandy strip of land off shore that protects the mainland These are pictures of Tybee Island, one of the closest barrier islands.

Oceans (cont) Continental shelf—gently sloping land on the bottom of the ocean Reef—A ridge of rock on ocean bottom—home to many creatures— sponges, coral Dune—mound of sand formed by wind and water
