mission The George Mason University Equestrian Club & intercollegiate team will allow student with an interest in horse back riding to practice and compete at the intercollegiate level regardless of financial status, riding experience, gender, sexual orientation, or religion. The club will focus on creating an environment conducive to learning, teaching, and improving skills in equestrian sports, while in the company of fellow students. Our goal is to produce riders who are safe, competent, and versatile. The club will also support the horse community in northern Virginia through charitable and community service events so that horses and equestrian activities can thrive and grow in our area. The club will also reach out to the George Mason University Student body by participation in campus organized events. IHSA The Intercollegiate Horse Show Association was founded on the principle that any college student should be able to participate in horse shows regardless of his or her financial status or riding levels. Emphasis is on learning, sportsmanship, and fun. Competition play a role but the students’ enthusiasm and team spirit are the major factors. The objective of the IHSA competition is to offer the opportunity to riders in the first years of riding as well as to students with show experience. Eliminating the expense of shipping or even owning horses puts IHSA competition within reach of many who would otherwise miss out on an equestrian experience. The gMU Equestrian Club competes in Zone 4, Region 1 against 16 other colleges and universities. During its inaugural year the club became the largest club sport at George Mason University and finished in the top ten out of 16 schools. Wanting to reach out to the local equestrian community, the club established a relationship with the Northern Virginia Therapeutic Riding Program and co-hosted the first Ride- to-thrive therapeutic riding show. Over the summer the club was the beneficiary of the United States Trail Ride Association s Memorial Day Benefit ride and hosted a successful schooling show in Middleburg, VA. Each year the club continues to grow and develop thanks to the support and involvement of our members and our local community. With your help the George Mason university’s equestrian program will rise to its full potential and beyond.
