Definition Simple definition: explaining what a term means or which meaning you intend, like a dictionary would do. Extended definition: Not only explaining what a term means, but adding detailed clarification of the word through a number of GENRES. Definition Definitions usually goes beyond just description (using the 5 senses). It explains the nature of the thing itself. Example: Northern Lights Definition: What is it? Description: What does it look like?

Illustration Makes an abstract term or difficult concept concrete (something you can see and touch). ex. truth ex. justice ex. unfair Audience may know what it means (definition) but they may not be able to visualize it they way you need them to. ex: My boss treats me unfairly.
Illustration Illustrations act as pictures—concrete representations—of an abstract idea you are trying to explain. Good ways to get illustrations (examples) into your writing: -Reference specific people, places, or things -Reference something familiar to your reader -Anecdotes: brief, informative stories that develop an idea or “drive home” a point”
