BOĞAZİÇİ JOINING TRT Boğaziçi University has been a member of the ATLAS Collaboration since 1994. Boğaziçi joined ATLAS under the leadership of Engin ARIK and participated in the studies of the ATLAS- TDAQ collaboration since the beginning. In 1999 Boğaziçi team joined the ATLAS-ID- TRT collaboration: 2 TRT Special Event / Serkant Ali Çetin 26.06.2013

ACTIVITIES of BOĞAZİÇİ in TRT Activities of Boğaziçi can be grouped in the following main headings: Test beam performance studies Induced radioactivity Software SR1 Test Facility 3 TRT Special Event / Serkant Ali Çetin 26.06.2013

ACTIVITIES of BOĞAZİÇİ in TRT Test Beam Performance Studies /1999-2000 26.06.2013 TRT Special Event / Serkant Ali Çetin 4 In 1999, Engin Arık with M.Sc. students Bükem Bilen, Özlem Çelik and Özgül Öztürk, participated in: - the preparation of the prototype to be used in the test beam - data taking - data analysis In 2000, Ph.D. student Serkant Çetin joined TRT studies and together with Engin Arık continued participation in test beams and data analysis.

ACTIVITIES of BOĞAZİÇİ in TRT Test Beam Performance Studies / 2000-2001 26.06.2013 TRT Special Event / Serkant Ali Çetin 5 Boğaziçi contributed to the maintenance of the software used online and offline. Boğaziçi team wrote the first event display used during the test runs and was responsible for the maintenance and operation of the event display. The event display showed the LL/HL hit information for all straws read-out through the prototype. When a straw was clicked, the time evolution was shown as well.

ACTIVITIES of BOĞAZİÇİ in TRT Test Beam Performance Studies / 2001-2002 26.06.2013 TRT Special Event / Serkant Ali Çetin 7 Resolution and efficiency studies were performed for threshold and position scans.

ACTIVITIES of BOĞAZİÇİ in TRT Induced Radioactivity / 2000-2002 26.06.2013 TRT Special Event / Serkant Ali Çetin 8 A study about the induced radioactivity was done for the first time. All TRT material, known up to date, was studied in terms of their neutron capture cross sections. Due to the high neutron flux most material could have gained induced radioactivity and this was studied as a function of time and position.

ACTIVITIES of BOĞAZİÇİ in TRT Induced Radioactivity / 2000-2002 26.06.2013 TRT Special Event / Serkant Ali Çetin 9 Later, the active gas system of the TRT was also studied. Due to the activation of xenon, different parts of the gas system were analysed in terms of radiation safety. Two ATLAS Internal Notes were published about Induced Radioactivity of the TRT. Later on, a workgroup was formed in ATLAS for activation studies in general.

ACTIVITIES of BOĞAZİÇİ in TRT 2003-2006 26.06.2013 TRT Special Event / Serkant Ali Çetin 13 Serkant finished his PhD end of 2002 and was off for military service in 2003-4. In 2005, Serkant became a faculty in Doğuş U. of İstanbul and Doğuş U. became a sub- institute of Boğaziçi U. in ATLAS. Due to some national funding problems, Boğaziçi was not able to send people to CERN easily. Meanwhile Engin Arık was contributing to the development of the monitoring code remotely and participating in the test beams when she could be at CERN. MSc students Engin Abat and Berkol Doğan joined TRT for a very short period around 2006.

ACTIVITIES of BOĞAZİÇİ in TRT Software / 2006-2007 26.06.2013 TRT Special Event / Serkant Ali Çetin 14 M.Sc. students Serhat Iştın and Neslihan Becerici joined TRT. They started contributing to the development of the monitoring code. Engin Arık invited Gaziantep University to join ATLAS and collaborate within TRT. Gaziantep U. also became a sub-institute of Boğaziçi U. in ATLAS. Andrew Beddall, Ayda Beddall and Ahmet Bingül from Gaziantep U. started to contribute in software.

November 30 th, 2007 26.06.2013 TRT Special Event / Serkant Ali Çetin 15 The fourth Workshop of the Turkish Accelerator Center (TAC) Project was to take place at Isparta between 30.11-02.12 2007. 10 Turkish universities collaborate in this project. Among these 10, Boğaziçi and Doğuş Universities (both in Istanbul) were close collaborators also in other projects. Three members of the Boğaziçi team and three from Doğuş team took the same late night flight from İstanbul to Isparta. The plane took off with a delay of a couple of hours and when it was about to land, crashed into a hill near Isparta airport. None out of the 50 passengers and 7 crew survived. Boğaziçi team had three members in the project, Engin Arık, Berkol Doğan and Engin Abat; all three were in the plane. Doğuş University had four members; three of them were in the plane, Şenel Boydağ, İskender Hikmet and Mustafa Fidan, the other member, Serkant Cetin, would join the meeting later on. Besides the TAC project, Engin Arık, Şenel Boydağ, İskender Hikmet and Berkol Doğan were also members of the CAST Collaboration at CERN. Engin Arık, Berkol Doğan and Engin Abat also collaborated in the ATLAS Experiment at CERN. Engin Arık was the team leader of the Experimental High Energy Physics group in ATLAS. She also acted as the ATLAS National Contact Physicist for Turkey. Her group was lately involved in ATLAS, CAST and TAC projects. Her former student Serkant Cetin, joined Doğuş University after completing his PhD at Boğaziçi. Şenel Boydağ was the chair of the Physics Division at Doğuş University. Within a year, Boğaziçi and Doğuş groups formed a very close and effective scientific collaboration working on the projects mentioned above. This was achieved mainly due to the inspiring and motivating nature of the two leaders, Engin Arık and Şenel Boydağ, and by the harmony and dedication of the group members. They are sorely missed…

26.06.2013 TRT Special Event / Serkant Ali Çetin 16 Engin’s name, sometimes having being pronounced as “engine” by people actually means deep and immense, which really reflects how much energy she had and that she was the driving force in many fields in Turkey. She collaborated in the CERN experiments SMC, CHORUS, ATLAS and CAST. Many young and even senior people have been inspired and motivated by her towards hep, detector and accelerator physics. She was the strongest voice and the main power in pushing forward the Turkish Accelerator Complex, CERN membersip and a better national organization in the field. It was the biggest chance and honor to have carried out my graduate studies with her and then continue collaborating with her in various projects.

ACTIVITIES of BOĞAZİÇİ in TRT Software / 2007 - present 26.06.2013 TRT Special Event / Serkant Ali Çetin 17 Boğaziçi has been involved in several tasks mostly through Gaziantep group: Reduction of the G4 hit size on disk for the TRT which led to 74% reduction for the TRT, corresponding to a 31% reduction for the ATLAS detector as a whole (ATL- COM-INDET-2010-014). CPU and memory monitoring studies which resulted in reducing TRT digitization CPU by more than 50%. Boğaziçi MSc students Serhat Iştın and Neslihan Becerici got involved in TRT Montoring and preparation of data quality histograms and configurations for histogram analyser framework. Software development for cosmics. TRT Alignment studies. TRT High Level Trigger studies. Responsibility for the development and maintenance of the TRT digitization working on speedup, tuning, FastOR, Argon and general maintenance. Andrew is the co-convener for the TRT offline SW work group.

ACTIVITIES of BOĞAZİÇİ in TRT SR1 Test Facility / 2009-2010 26.06.2013 TRT Special Event / Serkant Ali Çetin 18 Gaziantep MSc student Faruk Diblen worked in the preparation and testing of the system at SR1 (ATL-COM-INDET-2010-035): Tuning and maintaining the server used for the DAQ, modifiying and testing the DAQ for the SR1 system. Testing the chips on the detector and the electronic cards (RODPP, TTCPP, LVPP). Mechanical work including cables, gas system, cooling system. Preparing the trigger system and necessary database.

BOĞAZİÇİ IN TRT It's been an enormous pleasure to work within and be a part of the TRT family. 2 MSc and 1 PhD thesis were completed in TRT. We would like to give special thanks to the TRT project leaders and past and present conveners, who not only helped TRT to be a magnificiant detector (great_TRT) but also gave so much time and effort to support the Turkish institutes during their hardest times. Locally it was Metin Arık (Engin’s husband) during his deepest sorrow, who supplied all the help to our team and did not let it disappear. We are all grateful to him. The Boğaziçi team has now 4 faculties (although not fte’s) in TRT: Ahmet, Andrew, Ayda and Serkant. We are looking forward to the continuation of the successful operation of our detector leading to more and exciting discoveries… 19 TRT Special Event / Serkant Ali Çetin 26.06.2013
