TIGER By: Lucas Renton

DATA1-4 Q1: What animal did you choose?; and why? A1: Tiger, Because it is my favourite animal. Q2: What does your animal eat? A2: Meat; The favored prey of tigers is various species of deer and the succulent wild boar Q3: Where does it live? A3: Tropical rainforests, evergreen forests, mangrove swamps, grasslands, savannas, and temperate forests

NAME SOME UNIQUE FEATURES OF THIS ANIMAL. -Tigers have eyes with round pupils, unlike domestic cats, which have slitted pupils. This is because domestic cats are nocturnal whereas tigers are crepuscular – they hunt primarily in the morning and evening. -Tigers scratch trees and use their urine to mark their territories. Their urine smells strongly of buttered popcorn. - Tigers can tell the age, gender, and reproductive condition of other tigers by subtleties in the smell of urine markings. - The markings on a tiger’s forehead closely resemble the Chinese character for king, giving tigers a cultural status as a regal animal.

REASONS FOR ANIMALS ENDANGERED The main two causes for the tiger being endangered - Loss of habitat from Human activates, along with natural causes - Climate Change

CAN ITS EXTINCTION BE PREVENTED? IF SO, HOW? Conservationists believe that a key to saving the world's wild tigers from extinction is to put an end to poaching of tigers. To achieve that more police need to be trained to catch the hunters and take them to court. In addition the selling and trading of products made from endangered species on the black market should be better controlled. People sometimes hunt endangered species, like the tiger, to illegally sell the animal's body parts for souvenirs, medicines, and even food. Some people even pay high prices to buy tiger skins or other animal parts on the black market. By selling just one tiger, poachers can make enough money to live for a full year.

WHY HUMANS SHOULD PROTECT IT These ecosystems supply both nature and people with fresh water, food, and many other vital services – which means by saving the tiger, we are helping people too. Also forests catch and help store rainwater and protect soils. In this way we protect our rivers and recharge groundwater sources. Areas with less trees lead to floods, killing people and destroying homes. It takes away the precious soil, leaving behind a wasteland. The soil jams up our lakes and dams, reducing their ability to store water. By destroying the tiger's home, we not only harm tigers, but also ourselves.

HOW WOULD ITS EXTINCTION AFFECT THE ECOSYSTEM IN WHICH IT LIVES? As a large predator, the tiger plays a key role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. These ecosystems supply both nature and people with fresh water, food, and many other vital services – which means by saving the tiger, we are helping people too. Also forests catch and help store rainwater and protect soils. In this way we protect our rivers and recharge groundwater sources.
