Seattle SE/PE Meeting September 2010 Ocean Observatories Initiative Surface Piercing Profilers Tiger Team Presented to the Seattle SE/PS Meeting September 14 th and 15 th, 2010 Jim Broesch, Ed Dever,

Seattle SE/PE Meeting September 2010 Agenda Problem Statement Purpose of the Tiger Team Tiger team Deliverables Tiger Team Composition Status (of the team and of the effort) Preliminary list of candidate solutions Focused discussion General Discussion (time permitting) Summary / Future Directions

Seattle SE/PE Meeting September 2010 Problem Statement The benefits of having instrumentation mounted on a profiling platform are well understood. However, at this point in time there are no clear candidates to meet the OOI requirements for coastal or global surface piercing profilers.

Seattle SE/PE Meeting September 2010 Purpose of the Tiger Team The purpose of this tiger team is: 1) Identify viable candidates for surface piercing profilers or 2) if no such candidates can be identified, then to propose optimal solutions to approximately meet the OOI requirements for surface piercing profiler platforms.

Seattle SE/PE Meeting September 2010 Deliverables The tiger team will either deliver a list of candidate profilers or Select two options to mitigate the absence of profilers These results will be presented to the executive leadership (defined here as the OL PM and IO PIs) in November, 2010

Seattle SE/PE Meeting September 2010 Tiger Team Composition, Science Members Uwe Send (SIO) Ed Dever (OSU) (Shared with Engineering) Mari Best (UVIC) Bruce Howe (U of H)

Seattle SE/PE Meeting September 2010 Tiger Team Composition, Engineering Members Jim Broesch (SIO, Coordinator) Ed Dever (OSU) (Shared with Science) Ed Chapman (OL) Scott Allen (WHOI)

Seattle SE/PE Meeting September 2010 Current Status For the GHP, the primary candidate is the SeaCycler. The SeaCycler has undergone preliminary sea tests. The results were mixed: The system was functional. However, a number of engineering problems were identified. It is not clear whether or not the SeaCycler will meet schedule.

Seattle SE/PE Meeting September 2010 Preliminary Candidate Solutions Fixed sensor to a subsurface float with a surface telemetry expression. “Virtual Profiler” implemented with one or more gliders. For the GHP, move instrumentation to the surface float Leave the deep water profiler as it is. Fixed positioning. Surface winched profile from Surface Buoy.
