6 Summer 2009: VBI Virginia Bioinformatics Institute (VBI) is a research institute dedicated to the study of the biological sciences. The research platform of VBI focuses on the "disease triangle" of host-pathogen-environment interactions. Work at VBI involves collaboration in diverse disciplines: Mathematics / Statistics Computer Science Biology / Synthetic Biology Plant Pathology Biochemistry Systems Biology Economics

8 VBI Application Process Application Deadline is February 6, 2009 for all VBI programs 10 weeks: May 26 – July 31 Stipend, on-campus housing, meal plan, access to library & local transportation Students network and collaborate with students in MAOP summer program

10 Summer 2009: MAOP Multicultural Academic Opportunities Program Summer Research Internship for many disciplines, including several health and medical related areas 10 weeks: May 24 – July 31 $2,500 stipend, room & meal plan, GRE Preparation (possible MCAT), professional development & weekend activities

11 MAOP Opportunity in Veterinary Medicine Opportunity to explore research and hands-on training in Veterinary Medicine Veterinary Medicine not only taking care of cats and dogs; but includes many practical applications to the medical/health professions Typically supports up to 5 students with interest in a career in Veterinary Medicine or related field

12 MAOP Opportunity in VCOM Research Internships in the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) Hands-on experiences in a medical environment through research opportunities New opportunity exclusively for 3-5 Alliance participants

13 MAOP Opportunity in Health Research internships in health areas such as obesity, infectious diseases, vector- borne diseases and other health-related items that impact the medical/health fields Collaborations with cluster of faculty on various projects and experience in the lab environment Seeking 3-5 Alliance participants with interest in the above-mentioned areas

16 Summer 2009: MII SURP Opportunity at Virginia Tech’s Macromolecules and Interfaces Institute (MII). It is their Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) FIVE positions exclusively Alliance participants who are interested in materials research at the interface between polymer science and medicine

17 MII SURP Details Targets rising juniors and seniors Eleven week program: May 26 – August 7 $6,300 stipend Responsible for lodging and meals Eligible for travel reimbursement Apply early--Review of applications will begin February 1, 2009
