2 Section 6.1 Goals You can accomplish your goals when you are focused and positive. Learn to set short-term and long-term goals to achieve success. 2

4 Goal Setting Goals are necessary for success.
Goals can be short term, such as completing a course, or long term, such as going to college. goal Something one wants to achieve or accomplish. 4

5 Goal Setting Sometimes a short-term goal can help you achieve a long-term goal. short-term goal A goal that can be reached quickly, perhaps in a few days or weeks. long-term goal A goal that may take months or even years to reach.

6 Goal Setting Goals should be: realistic. specific. challenging.
active. thought-out. flexible.

7 Achieve Goals To achieve a goal, develop a plan to reach it.
Determine what resources you need to reach your goal. A positive attitude: helps you do your best. inspires you. helps you tackle difficult jobs. attitude The way one feels about something. 7

8 Achieve Goals Setting priorities often means making trade-offs.
Both successful and disappointing experiences can help you grow and develop. trade-off Something that one gives up in order to get something else. Think of a disappointing experience that you had. How did it help you grow and develop? 8

9 Achieve Goals When you achieve a goal, your self-worth improves and you want to set new goals. When you know what went wrong, you can improve your chances for success next time. 9

Decisions can be big or small. Making responsible decisions now can have a positive impact on your future.

16 Decision Making Identify the five steps in the decision-making process. Step Description Step 1 Identify the problem. Step 2 Consider the alternatives. Step 3 Choose the best alternative. Step 4 Act on it. Step 5 Evaluate the decision.

Use good timing and consider consequences when making decisions. Responsible decision making gives you control over your life. consequence The result of a choice. 17

Be willing to make mistakes, and seek advice when needed. Accept responsibility for your decisions. You show integrity when you admit your mistakes. integrity Sticking to a code of moral values; honor and truthfulness. 18

A goal is something you want to achieve. You need to make sure that goals are realistic. Goal setting requires planning and a positive attitude. Some goals will be more important to you than others. As you experience success in reaching your goals, you can feel good about yourself. If you do not achieve a goal, you can learn from the experience and improve your skills for the next goal. 19
