1 This unit may be helpful in working on the following standards: Math Measurement MKM1 b. Compare and order objects on the basis of capacity M4M1 b. Know units used to measure weight (ounces). M5M3 Students will measure capacity with appropriately chosen units and tools. Math QCC Measurement & Geometry Grade 11 Standard 9: Selects appropriate measuring instruments and measures accurately …………….. volume/capacity …… …..weight/mass……. E/LA Reading Comprehension for informational texts The student participates in student-to-teacher, student-to-student, and group verbal interactions.

2 Suggested activities: Gather a variety of measuring cups and pint, quart and gallon containers. Allow students to practice pouring water into each of the containers “measuring” each of the amounts. Have students guess how many of each will fit into the containers. Using cup, pint, quart and gallon containers, have students put them in order from smallest to largest or largest to smallest. Using sale flyers, have students look for the words “cup, pint, quart, gallon”. Plan a CBI trip to a large department store (such as Wal-Mart, Target or K-Mart). Find products in each of the container sizes. The last worksheet page could be used for this. The following Measuring Equivalents could be given to students as a guide to use at school or home, if appropriate for their level of functioning.

4 The following is an interactive book. Laminate each page as well as 8 half sheets of plain card stock. Each page of the book can then be put together with an attached partial blank page to fold out to hold the Velcroed corresponding pictures to use for matching.

16 Use the following pages to make a folder game. On the first page there are pictures of items to match to each size container. Each picture has a written cue for its size. As your students make progress, you can have them find more pictures from coupons or sale flyers. You can also make the activity more difficult by using pictures with abbreviations or indicating the number of ounces. There are some extra pictures provided on the second page.
