May 2 - 8, 2010 “If the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes the life of one of them, that man will be taken away because of his sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for his blood.” (Ezekiel 33:6, New International Version) Weekly World Watch Andy Walton’s To skip the introductory slides and go straight to this weeks developments click here.

What is a Weekly World Watch? Israel: The continuing conflict in the Middle East and focus on Jerusalem. Europe: Its developing union, both political and religious. Russia: Its return to anti-Western ways as Bible prophecy’s “king of the north.” The UK and the US: Bible prophecy’s “king of the south.” Moral standards in decline and violence on the increase. WWW presentations in PowerPoint can be ordered as audio/visual CDs by clicking here. Move your mouse to place the cursor on the blue link and click.clicking here The idea is simple. It is to look at current events and compare them to events spoken of in the Bible.. I hope to build up a picture of God’s hand working in the affairs of this world. God is bringing about a day when all nations will be gathered to Jerusalem to battle. At that time God will send His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, back to this earth. Jesus will then establish God’s kingdom on earth. This kingdom will last for ever. This is our hope and the reason we watch. Increasing natural disasters: including earthquake, famine etc The following six themes will appear repeatedly in WWW:

HEADLINE EVENT COMMENT News Photo The source of the headline and the date are included. Each WWW looks at a few key developments that have happened during the past week. It is in no way meant to be exhaustive – just a look at those events I saw as significant from a Biblical point of view. What is in a Weekly World Watch? BIBLE QUOTE This is normally one verse which backs up why the event that has occurred is interesting from a Biblical perspective. Please read in its context. Unless stated otherwise, all quotes are from the King James Version. (Book, chapter, and verse) This is straight from a news report that caught my eye because it looked significant from a Biblical perspective, usually that of prophecy. Every WWW event slide has the following format. To reveal each block of text just left click your mouse or press the space bar. You control when it appears. This is the reporter’s description of the event. It is always a direct quotation from the news report and reflects the understanding of the reporter and editors. This is my comment on why the event is interesting to a Bible student. The intention of the WWW is to offer brief Biblical perspectives without going into detail. If more detail is desired, please me:

Hung Parliament in the UK Britain, it seems, has finally become European, at least in its political system. The UK's much-dreaded hung parliament would be business as usual on the Continent, where parties are used to forming coalition governments. Britain's unfair first-past-the- post system needs to finally be fixed. British beer is famous for tasting flat to continental Europeans. Equally flat was the mood that set in over the course of the long election night after Britons voted in Thursday's general election. The result is disappointingly undecided: The British wanted change, but not enough to actually get it. They have obviously had enough of Labour's Gordon Brown and his government, but they do not necessarily want Conservative challenger David Cameron as prime minister. With around 36 percent of the total vote, the Tories narrowly missed their goal of winning a majority of seats in parliament. Now the British have produced a very un-British election result: a hung parliament in which no single party has a majority of seats. In the eyes of the Brits, coalition governments have been regarded, at least up until now, as an excessively complex invention by those continental Europeans. Such governments were seen as incapable of action, and coalitions were thought to promote haggling between parties and political corruption. On Friday morning, however, as the results came in, London's politicians found themselves in unchartered territory -- and that makes them nervous. Hung parliaments are a rare thing in Britain, with the most recent one being in Back then, it proved impossible for any party to form a stable government, and fresh elections were called a few months later. Spiegel online, May 5, 2010 EVENT Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Whatever the government in the UK looks like it will have been established by God BIBLE QUOTE (Romans 13:1 NIV)

Hung Parliament in the UK As of today, Saturday 8 th May, no one is entirely certain who will be the next prime minister of Britain. This election produced no overall winner. What we do know for certain is that the next government will be a weak one. Whoever does become prime minister will have to rely on the support of a political party called the Liberal Democrats. This political party has very pro European in outlook. It is also the only major party that did not support the war in Iraq. It is extremely “anti war”. Remarkably ALL these elements fit directly into Biblical prophecy concerning Britain’s role at the time of the end. Britain weakened politically – Ezekiel 38:13 speaks of Tarshish (Britain) stood on the side lines questioning why Gog and many other nations have invaded Israel. This portrays a weak nation not willing to fight for Israel as it has done before. So what about Britain’s current and future relationship with Europe? Well the Bible speaks clearly about this in Isaiah 23. This speaks of the destruction of Tyre. Isaiah 23:6 says (speaking of Tyre) “Pass ye over to Tarshish”. So Tyre passes over to Britain. Britain became the new Tyre. Britain setup colonies all around the world – like ancient Tyre. Britain became the centre of commerce – like ancient Tyre. Isaiah 23:15 says “after the end of seventy years shall Tyre sing as an harlot.” It continues in verse 17 “Tyre, and she shall turn to her hire, and shall commit fornication with all the kingdoms of the world.” So Britain (modern Tyre) sings like a harlot. Britain commits fornication with all the nations of the world. The “harlot” refers to Europe and the false religion of Rome that controls Europe. See Revelation 17. So in other words Britain starts becoming like a harlot herself – pro European. There is no mention of Britain ending this relationship. This election has ensured a weakened, harlot like Britain. Spiegel online, May 5, 2010 COMMENT And it shall come to pass in that day, that Tyre shall be forgotten seventy years, according to the days of one king: after the end of seventy years shall Tyre sing as an harlot. the LORD will visit Tyre, and she shall turn to her hire, and shall commit fornication with all the kingdoms of the world upon the face of the earth. Note: latter day Tyre = Britain BIBLE QUOTE (Isaiah 23:15,17)

Greece's debt crisis could spread across Europe A third straight day of decline in world financial markets on Thursday was vivid evidence of a scary proposition: That the fiscal crisis that began in Greece months ago is spreading across Europe like a virus, causing growing doubt even about the fates of nations with far more manageable levels of government debt. It is called the contagion effect, economists' metaphor for the rapid and hard-to-predict spread of a financial crisis, and it's driven by the fragility of investors' perceptions. Contagion is a function of vicious cycles in which confidence in a country's ability to repay its debts falls. If investors lose piles of money on the debt of one country, they assume that owning the debts of other countries with similar finances might cause them to lose even more. So they sell their investment in the second country, which in turn must pay higher and higher interest rates to get any loans, which adds to its debt and creates a fiscal death spiral that can well move on to the next country. The Washington Post, May 7, 2010 EVENT COMMENT Behold, the LORD maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof. And it shall be, as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the taker of usury, so with the giver of usury to him. BIBLE QUOTE (Isaiah 24:1-2) Rioting, violence, even deaths all occurred in Greece this week due to the financial crisis enveloping that country. It is technically bankrupt. As the report says, this crisis has the ability to sweep across Europe and around the world. It could be part two of the coming financial collapse - which this time is not banks going bust but entire countries! We quoted on the previous slide Isaiah 23 in relation to Britain becoming like a harlot. The final verse of this chapter speaks of Britain’s wealth “not being treasured nor laid up”. In effect Britain loses its wealth. The very next chapter speaks of the total financial collapse of the entire earth. “It shall be the same for seller and buyer, for borrower and lender, for debtor and for creditor”. These verses are not yet fulfilled. It may not be very long before they are. The earth will be laid waste and plundered. The Lord has spoken.

Peres: Israel ready for deal on Palestinian state Israel is ready to negotiate the terms of Palestinian statehood, although it wants its security concerns addressed in the initial stages of indirect talks, the Israeli president said Friday after meeting with the U.S. Mideast envoy. George Mitchell, who is President Barack Obama's special representative for Mideast peace, is in the region for the start of four months of indirect talks between the Israelis and Palestinians that aim to bridge vast differences between the sides on the contours of a future Palestinian state. The Palestinians want the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem -- territories Israel captured in the 1967 Mideast War -- for their state, but have said they are willing to make some minor land exchanges. Israeli President Shimon Peres, who fills a largely ceremonial role, said the Jewish state is ready to negotiate. "Israel seeks a historic peace agreement with the Palestinians that will result in the founding of an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel," Peres said after meeting with Mitchell. Boston Globe, May 7, 2010 EVENT COMMENT For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.. BIBLE QUOTE And so the peace talks begin. Over the next four months the boundaries of Israel will be discussed and drawn up. These boundaries include the West Bank and Jerusalem. Israel must make the choice between peace and settlements, the Palestinian Authority urged on Friday. We know that when the final destruction comes there will be peace talks underway. Remember that the verse below does not say there IS peace but they are “saying” or “talking about” peace. We also know that the destruction will not catch those who are watching unawares. (1 Thessalonians 5:3-4) George Mitchell & Israeli President Shimon Peres

Hezbollah says it's ready for fresh war with Israel Nearly four years after Hezbollah fought invading Israeli troops to a standstill in south Lebanon, the militant Shiite group says it's prepared for a fresh conflict and confident of victory. "We are ready for another war and we eagerly await it," says veteran Hezbollah fighter Abu Hadi on a drive through the Bekaa Valley. "We expect the next war to be short. The Israelis will not be able to endure what we will do to them." Hezbollah's leadership insists it does not seek a war and that its military preparations are a defence against potential Israeli aggression. Yet, the inconclusive outcome of the 2006 war has stoked a feeling here that another war is inevitable. War drums have been beating faster in recent weeks amid allegations that Syria has supplied Hezbollah with Scud ballistic missiles a development that has enraged Israel, forced Lebanese leaders to seek international support, and complicated a gradual US-Syria rapprochement. On May 3, President Obama renewed sanctions on Syria for a year because of its "continuing support for terrorist organizations and pursuit of weapons of mass destruction and missile programs." Yahoo News, May 7, 2010 EVENT COMMENT For, lo, thine enemies make a tumult: and they that hate thee have lifted up the head. They have taken crafty counsel against thy people, and consulted against thy hidden ones. They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance. As the report says “the war drums have been beating faster in recent weeks”. We know for certain at some point there will be conflict between Israel and those terrorist organisations that surround her which are supported by Syria. It could well be part one of the final conflict where Syria, Hezbollah and Hamas attack Israel seeking her destruction. Israel will overcome this first onslaught but will be left very weakened. Syria will be completely destroyed in this war. The second phase of the war is detailed out in Ezekiel 38 where Russia and Iran and other nations will invade Israel. Part one is detailed in Isaiah 17 and Psalm 83. BIBLE QUOTE (Psalm 83:2-4)

Putin snubs Britain and US over VE Day celebrations Vladimir Putin has snubbed both the Prince of Wales and the US vice-president, Joe Biden, by refusing to allow them to attend a parade in Red Square marking the 65th anniversary of the end of the second world war, the Guardian has learned. Russia invited Gordon Brown and other heads of state to attend the Kremlin's celebrations on Sunday – the biggest ever. But with the prime minister unable to attend because of the general election, the Foreign Office suggested Prince Charles instead. Last week, however, the prince was quietly stood down after Putin made it clear that he did not want him there – apparently in a sign of his continuing annoyance with the UK over its failure to extradite Boris Berezovsky, the Kremlin critic and former oligarch, to Russia. Putin, Russia's prime minister, also snubbed Biden, who had planned to go to Moscow and has been left kicking his heels in Brussels. Biden is close to Mikheil Saakashvili, Georgia's president. The White House is privately furious at the snub. Barack Obama told Russia's president, Dmitry Medvedev, he was unable to attend but had confidently offered Biden as his replacement. Moscow's diplomatic corps has been abuzz all week with news of Putin's unexpected veto. Guardian, May 7, 2010 EVENT COMMENT And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over. BIBLE QUOTE (Daniel 11:40) Putin still calls the shots in Russia. He appears to becoming more aggressive in recent days. The Kremlin is in an uncompromising mood following a recent string of foreign policy successes. These include the overthrow of Ukraine's pro-western government and its replacement by a pro-Russian one, and last month's revolution in Kyrgyzstan, now run by a more Kremlin-friendly administration. One day the “king of the north” or “Gog”, will attack the “king of the south” or “Tarshish and the young lions” and in so doing will invade Israel and pass through into Egypt.
