1 The Holy Spirit (I) Power and Presence for the New life Jn 3:8 “The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

2 The Giver of life “Spirit” = Heb. ruach (OT); Gk. pneuma (NT). – Lit. “Breath” or “wind” E.g., pneumatic (air-wrenches, air-drills, air-nailers) E.g., Pneumonia (disease of the lungs – breathing)

3 The Giver of life “Breath of life” Gen 2:7 “Then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.”

4 The Giver of life “Breath of life” –Body without breath/spirit is dead: Psalms 104:29 “You hide Your face, they are dismayed; You take away their spirit, they expire And return to their dust.”

5 The Giver of life “Breath of life” –Body without breath/spirit is dead: Eccl 12:7 “then the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it.”

6 The Giver of life “Breath of life” –Body without breath/spirit is dead: Jas 2:26 “For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.”

7 The Giver of life The power for life comes from God’s Spirit –It is God’s Spirit that gives us life: Job 33:4 “The Spirit of God has made me, And the breath of the Almighty gives me life.”

8 The Giver of life The power for life comes from God’s Spirit –When God removes his Spirit, we die: Job 34:14-15 “If He should determine to do so, If He should gather to Himself His spirit and His breath, All flesh would perish together, And man would return to dust.”

9 The Giver of life The power for life comes from God’s Spirit –When God sends his Spirit, life is renewed: Psa 104:29-30 “You hide Your face, they are dismayed; You take away their spirit, they expire And return to their dust. You send forth Your Spirit, they are created; And You renew the face of the ground.”

10 The Giver of life The power for life comes from God’s Spirit –When God sends his Spirit, life is renewed: Ezek 37:14 “I will put My Spirit within you and you will come to life, and I will place you on your own land. Then you will know that I, the LORD, have spoken and done it," declares the LORD.’”

11 The Giver of life The Spirit renews spiritual and physical life Jn 6:63 “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.”

12 The Giver of life The Spirit renews spiritual and physical life –Physical life restored: Rom 8:11 “But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.”

13 The Giver of life The Spirit renews spiritual and physical life –Spiritual life renewed: Titus 3:5 “He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit”

14 The Provider of Power The Supernatural Enabler –E–E–E–Empowerment to perform a divinely- ordained task: Ex 31:1-6 “Now the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, ‘See, I have called by name Bezalel, the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. I have filled him with the Spirit of God in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all kinds of craftsmanship, to make artistic designs for work in gold, in silver, and in bronze, and in the cutting of stones for settings, and in the carving of wood, that he may work in all kinds of craftsmanship. And behold, I Myself have appointed with him Oholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan; and in the hearts of all who are skillful I have put skill, that they may make all that I have commanded you’”

15 The Provider of Power The Supernatural Enabler –Empowerment to perform a divinely- ordained task: Zech 4:6 “Then he said to me, "This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel saying, ' Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,' says the LORD of hosts.”

16 The Provider of Power The Supernatural Enabler –Empowered the Judges/Deliverers such as Othniel (Jud 3:10), Gideon (6:34), Jephthah (11:29), and Sampson (Jud 14:6)

17 The Provider of Power The Supernatural Enabler –Empowered the prophets: 1 Pet 1:10-12 “As to this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that would come to you made careful searches and inquiries, seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow. It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven — things into which angels long to look.”

18 The Provider of Power The Supernatural Enabler –Empowered the prophets: 2 Pet 1:20-21 “But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.”

42 Mediates the Presence of God The Forgotten Gift –The Indwelling Spirit: Not in the same way Christ or the Father live in Christians: –Jesus dwells in us through the indwelling Holy Spirit Eph 3:16-17 “that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love.”

43 Mediates the Presence of God The Forgotten Gift –The Indwelling Spirit: Not in the same way Christ or the Father live in Christians: –Jesus dwells in us through the indwelling Holy Spirit 1 Jn 3:24 “The one who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. We know by this that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.”
