STATISTICS IN SOCCER By: Nina Joseph
DETERMINING PLAYER WORTH Statisticians have created formulas to measure factors such as how often a player completes a play that is very likely to lead to a goal. A player’s percentage of passes completed, goals scored, and possession time can be calculated.
THE SPEED CELL Adidas introduced cleats in 2011 that contain an 8gb chip capable of measuring a player’s pace, distance, speed, and acceleration. This technology allows statisticians to collect even more data on players.
GAME ANALYSIS Statistics can show which team controlled different aspects of a game, such as possession. For Example, in a Mexico vs. US game, Mexico accounted for 45 of the 63 recoveries in the center of the field.
DETERMINING PLAYS Statistics allow teams to analyze which plays are most often effective in leading to goals For instance, corner kicks are less successful than most people think in leading to goals In a sample of games from Major League Soccer games, only 45 goals were scored as a result of the 1,894 corner kicks taken
