Problem Solving What is Mathematical Problem Solving? When we figure out the solution to a problem by applying strategies and procedures, we are problem solving!!! Why do we teach problem solving skills? Promotes critical thinking Flexibility Test preparation Increase mathematical comprehension Focus on student understanding of the entire problem and not simply repetitive algorithms Student awareness of mathematical processes is in line with the Common Core Standards
How do we teach kids to problem solve? The 4 Step Method: Step 1 – Find OutStep 2 – Choose Strategies (Make a game plan) *What is happening in the problem? *What do I have to find out to solve the problem? *Are there any words or ideas that I don’t understand? *What information can I use? *Am I missing any information that I need? *Make a plan for solving the problem by choosing a strategy or combination of strategies. Related Vocabulary: Addition: sum, total, in all Subtraction: difference, how much more, exceed Multiplication: product, total, area. Times, equal groups Division: share, distribute, quotient, average, equal groups
