A syphon is created every time a sample is required by utilising the water supply line as a power source. Due to its South-Afriacn origin, pricing is minimally affected by the Rand/Dollar exchange rate. Operation for flocculant addition A sample is drawn from the thickener feedwell by means of syphoning into a transparant settling cylinder after allowing thorough mixing in the feedwell to ensure optimum flocculantion. With the settling cylinder filled, suspended solids start settling. The interface passes through a specific distance and the elapsed time is measured. A PLC compares the elapsed time with a precalculated standard and generates a proportional signal for controlling the rate of introduction of flocculant into the thickener based on the comparison. A cycle comprises of : a) Air displacement b) Create syphon c) Sampling mode d) Measuring mode e) Flushing mode The number of cycles are fully adjustable. The program menu provides for adjusting the duration of each mode to suit site conditions. 2 -/2 In order to control the level of the Floc Bed to prevent sliming a sample is drawn from a safe distance above where the floc bed would normally be found. Should the floc bed rise to this level a dirty overflow would be signalled at an early stage. In response to such a signal, an alarm is triggered and a digital contact is closed speeding up the underflow pump to its maximum set speed. The Flocsaver then takes alternative samples between the feed and overflow, until a clear sollution is again sensed and the underflow pump resumes it’s normal duty. Underflow density control can be incorporated in the PLC program. A flow and density signal is used for cascade control to ensure that a minimum flowrate is maintained to prevent blockage. This also allows for accounting should it be required. Averaging of two or more samples smoothen the output signal and thus provides for minimal adjustments. Taking into account all the above, it is clear that the Floc- saver on its own can effectively control a thickener and maintain optimum throughput.
