The Terrier Group (Awwwwwwwe) The Terrier Group (Awwwwwwwe)
History The word terrier refers to the earth and comes from the Latin root terra. Originally, some were developed to kill rats in pit contests and later each other. Roughly divided between long and short- legged breeds. Bred for hunting vermin and digging deep into earth to get them!
The Breakdown (Roughly) Long-Legged Terriers: ◦ American Staffordshire, Airedale, Bedlington, Border, Fox, Kerry Blue, Lakeland, Manchester, and Parson Russell terriers. Short-Legged Terriers: ◦ American Staffordshire, Australian, Bull, Cairn, Dandie Dinmont, Glen of Imaal, Norfolk, Norwich, Scottish, Sealyham, Skye, and West Highland White terriers.
Terrier Special Requests Despite their size, these dogs have hunting in their blood. ◦ High – Ultra high energy! Early socialization is a MUST! ◦ Not just with people, but other dogs and smaller animals as well! Must have enough exercise to keep obsessive behavior at bay. ◦ To prevent OCD, activities like agility, frisbee or flyball. ◦ For the larger terriers, add weight or pulling to walks.
(More)Terrier Special Requests Exercise, exercise, and um, exercise! (Physical and mental please.) No smaller pets in the home. (They may become a terrier’s snack) Bred to dig and not back down. If you have a beautifully landscaped yard, don’t get a terrier! These dogs are FAST, so leashes are a must Best in homes with experienced trainers. ◦ This breed may be a bit too focused for the novice dog-owner.
