3 Example of Graduated Rent in THP+FC Monthly Stipend to youth: $600  $200 for rent  $400 for basic living expenses including bills, food, clothing, transportation and other personal expenses  This could be paid out twice a month in halves like the BAYC model or one large monthly payment

6 Advantages of graduated rent  Gives youth real-world information about the cost of housing  Motivates youth to increase income while in program and likely exit with a higher income  Creates saving account for youth at end of the program to be used for security deposit or something else  Places an emphasis that transition into independent living will occur soon

7 Challenges of graduated rent approach  Need to remember exactly where each youth is on the rent schedule  Need to carefully account for youth’s money so that all rent “above” what they receive in their stipend is saved on their behalf  Need to increase income of youth
