Defined – Total Depravity “The doctrine understands the Bible to teach that, as a consequence of the Fall of man, every person born into the world is morally corrupt, enslaved to sin and is, apart from the grace of God, utterly unable to choose to follow God or choose to turn to Christ in faith for salvation.” From – theopedia.com
Defined – Total Depravity In summary – this doctrine teaches that from birth man is : – Unable to have faith, obey God or even seek salvation – Salvation can only come when God decides to operate on the heart and convert the person – Man can do NOTHING to bring about his salvation
Illustration supporters use Here is the picture they paint: A man is bound, gagged and chained to the floor in a burning building. He can do NOTHING to save himself. There is a man outside who rushes in and saves the man from the fire. The saved man can not say that he saved himself.
Problem with Illustration Here is a correction to the picture they paint: There is not just one man in the burning building. There are 2. There is a man outside chooses to save one and let the other die in the fire.
Problem with Illustration The man is not able to do anything to aid his rescue (seek help, call out) Application: He can not believe, repent, obey God Why does God command us? Why the command to believe? Why command us to repent, confess Christ, be baptized?
Scene on Judgment Day All mankind is before the Throne of God Saved on the right, Lost on the left SAVED – Come, inherit heaven and eternal life. LOST – Wicked, unbelieving, did not repent, did not obey the gospel
Scene on Judgment Day 1 Thessalonians 1:7-8 7 and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, 8 in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Scene on Judgment Day Why am I lost? I could not believe like you commanded me to do. Why did you decide to save others and not save me? Why wasn't I changed and converted? What can't you love me?
Jeremiah 13:23 Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard its spots? Then may you also do good who are accustomed to do evil. It is taught that this verse teaches that you can not change; That we are hopeless, helpless, and can do nothing to facilitate our salvation.
Jeremiah 13:22 Read the verse before it And if you say in your heart, "Why have these things come upon me?" For the greatness of your iniquity Your skirts have been uncovered, Your heels made bare. They chose to live in iniquity, lust and immorality. They will not change.
Jeremiah 13:24-25 Read the verses after it 24 "Therefore I will scatter them like stubble That passes away by the wind of the wilderness. 25 This is your lot, The portion of your measures from Me," says the Lord, "Because you have forgotten Me And trusted in falsehood. They forgot, (abandoned) God.
Summary We are responsible for our choice to sin. James 1:15-15 14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full- grown, brings forth death.
Summary We are responsible for our choice to sin. Ezekiel 18:4 "Behold, all souls are Mine; The soul of the father As well as the soul of the son is Mine; The soul who sins shall die.
Summary You can not blame God if you are lost. You can only praise God if you are saved. God has given commands for us to obey Believe Repent Be baptized
