2 5 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. 6 Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but like slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. 7 Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men, 8 because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free. 9 And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. 3 5 Slaves, The status of Roman slaves: No more rights nor legal protection than a chair: No right to life or liberty, only the master’s gain. They could be sold at will, or killed. If their master was murdered, they were executed. If their master committed suicide, they were executed. A major part of Roman society in terms of both population and economic influence. In the worst of our hierarchal relationship are far better than this! Ephesians 6:5-9

4 5 Slaves, Is there a correlation to today? Are we financially dependant upon our employers? Do our employers profit from our labor? Does our general well being depend upon our employers? Can our employers treat us however they want to? Can we easily escape work mistreatment? Regard “slave” as “employee” and “master” as “boss.” Ephesians 6:5-9

In reality, it is Christ that we seek to please in our conduct in negative hierarchal relationships. You cannot always please your master, but you can always please Christ. As “slaves” of Christ, we are “owned” by the ultimate benevolent master, who seeks Ephesians 2:1-10 for us. Heart ~ psuche, from the depth of who you are Ephesians 6:5-9
