Motifs The line “There is a way to be good again.” (192) is repeated. This is what Rahim Khan told Amir when they were on the phone. This is significant because Amir thinks that Rahim Kahn knows about everything with Hassan. The General Sahib broke his right hip. Wounds come up often in this book. Amir has a dream about the kite competition, which says that he has been thinking about Hassan. Dreams are a big part of The Kite Runner, and they usually have a significant meaning. In this dream, there is another motif Hassan says the words “For you a thousand times over!” (194) This line was said in the story already, so it has significance.
Plot Points Rahim Kahn calls Amir, and tells him that he is gravely ill, and Amir decides that he is going to visit him. Amir walks around the Golden Gate Park, and recalls his conversation with Rahim Khan. Amir feels that Rahim Khan knows about all the dishonorable things he did to Hassan. Soraya’s parents are going to live with her, while Amir goes to Afghanistan because her dad is very sick with kidney failure. When Soraya falls asleep, Amir thinks about how much they have changed since they found out about Soraya’s infertility. Amir has a dream about the kite flying tournament, and about Hassan chasing the Kite. The chapter ends with Amir in the airplane, and he is trying to fall asleep.
Significant Quote “My suspicions had been right all those years. He knew about Assef, the kite, the money, the watch with the lightning bolt hands. He had always known. Come. There is a way to be good again, Rahim Khan had said on the phone just before hanging up. Said it in passing, almost an afterthought. A way to be good again.” This quote is significant because Amir learns something important. He realizes that what he thought he was keeping a secret, was known by Rahim Khan all along. Rahim Khan knows about Assef raping Hassan, and he knows that Amir did nothing to stop it. This is a big event in the chapter.
