3 3 | Wind and Water Power Programeere.energy.gov Purpose, Objectives, & Integration Aeration is needed at most hydroelectric facilities to add oxygen to low DO water released from the bottom of reservoirs by hydroturbines. One of the most effective means of aerating is through release of air on the turbine runner blades. Turbine runner designers do not have the tools (experiments or computational codes) to design effective aeration on a runner blade.

4 4 | Wind and Water Power Programeere.energy.gov Purpose, Objectives, & Integration This project will: –Perform experiments to develop a test-bed for all computational codes used in hydroturbine design. –Develop and implement algorithms to simulate oxygen transfer process in a hydroturbine Improved environmental performance and decreased environmental impacts of hydroturbines will advance the capabilities and reduce the cost of energy resulting from conventional hydropower technologies.
