The Equine Muscular System Equine Science

Muscles O Function: O Provide movement O Active organs of motion O Contract or change shape when stimulated O One or more nerves bring commands AND send signals O Red flesh O Make up about 50% of total body weight

Types of Muscles O Smooth (Involuntary) O Cardiac (Involuntary Striated) O Skeletal (Striated)

Smooth Muscle O Also called visceral muscle O Location: O Digestive system O Uterus O Capable of prolonged periods of activity O Peristalsis: wavelike contractions of digestive system muscles O Contraction is involuntary

Cardiac Muscle O Location: ONLY found in the heart O Requires NO nerve stimulus O Requires NO conscious control O Rate of contraction controlled by the nervous system

Skeletal Muscle O Move the body voluntarily O Usually attached to the bony levers of the skeleton O Utilizes tendons to transmit the pull of the muscle O Permits several muscles to attach at one point O Generally arranged in pairs O Become fatigued and require rest

Skeletal Muscle O Extensor: extends a joint and brings bones into alignment O Flexor: bends the joint O Some muscles can act as both O Opposed muscles act successively

Tendons O Strong, cordlike structure that transmits the pull of the muscle as it contracts O Tendon Sheath: synovial sac through which a tendon passes O Tendon Bursa: synovial sac between the tendon and the surface over which it passes in a change of direction O Both secrete synovia for lubrication O Both usually found near joints

Five Major Functional Muscle Groups O Forearms: allow for smooth gait and absorb shock O Quadriceps: (hindquarters) used for propulsion O Pectorals: carrying space for lungs O Back: support riders or packs O Stomach: hold organs in place
