Standards Certification Education & Training Publishing Conferences & Exhibits The FUNdamental Elements of LDAR Training By Colin Sheffield and Bridgett Morales Bloc Environmental Solutions

2 Presenters In 2013, we did something a little crazy. We left our stable jobs with our former employer to start our own environmental company. We named the company Bloc Environmental Solutions. We quickly learned that without enforcement and oversight, people don’t always do what they are supposed to do. After some gentle nudging by friends in the industry (and our spouses) we decided to include traditional LDAR in our work scope. We agreed that Educating our Workforce and Auditing our programs would be high priorities in our company for the following reasons: Create a high standard for safety and compliance Improved Customer Service Employee Retention

Fundamentals of Safety and Compliance Monitoring Tech Requirements Calibrate Monitor Document MOC / Tag Maintenance First Attempts Monitoring Tech Common Safety Issues Rushing Fatigue Complacency Frustration Eyes & Mind off task Line of Fire and body position Losing balance, traction or grip 3

Purpose of Training Regulatory Compliance Communication –Teaching the Why –Making it personal Develop the employee Employee Involvement Sets Expectations Developing Company Culture Knowledge is Power 4

Training Realities Misconceptions Training is Boring! Training sessions do not make a difference People act logically You are not in Sales Truths Safety & compliance are vital and important aspects of daily life Training can be effective and fun People act emotionally You must sell people on safety and compliance

Qualities of a Good Trainer (aka the no-brainer slide) Competence in the subject matter Desire to help them learn Enthusiasm Creativity Organization Relevant Information Makes it personal Ability to answer questions Not afraid to say “I don’t know, but I will get back to you” (and then follow up) Good presence – Appearance, voice, body language

Obstacles to Training Retention Generation gaps Time and Money Turn over / Employee Retention Different Learning Styles –Book/Lecture Learning –Hands on Ineffective training techniques –If they don’t remember the training, they haven’t been trained effectively. Do you have the right person training your people? 7

How do People Learn? They retain: 10% of what they read 20% of what they hear 30% of what they see 50% of what they see and hear 70% of what they say 90% of what they do and say This is why the “hands-on” portion of training is so important. 20

Fundamental Elements So really, what is LDAR? 1.Tag it 2.Monitor it 3.Repair it if it leaks 4.Report results to the appropriate agency It’s really that simple. 21

Summary and Q&A Remember, a Bloc is a group of people moving together in a common direction for a common goal. We’re all in this together… Safe Compliance is the goal. If we can avoid overcomplicating the process, we can achieve the goal. 22
