General Information The black mamba is a reptile. Its scientific name is dendroaspis polylepsis They generally live up to 11 years old. Slide 1

Physical Characteristics Black mambas are olive to gray in color. It can grow up to 14 feet, but normally just grows to around 8½ feet. They weigh about 4 pounds. Black mambas are covered in scales. They have fangs that are half of an inch long and inject deadly venom using its venom glands. Slide 1

Habitat Black mambas live in the savannas, woodlands, and bush countries of Africa. It is very dry or arid in its habitat. Slide 1

Behavior Black Mambas eat rats, bats, hyraxes, and even birds. They will hide and wait until its prey passes by, then if its prey is small it bites onto it and holds onto it until its prey is stunned from the snakes venom. If it’s big prey it bites it and then follows it around until its stunned from the snakes venom. Black mambas lay eggs. They lay 6 to 17 eggs. Slide 1

Interesting facts Black mambas are the fastest snake in the world, it can reach up to 12mph. Its not called “black” mamba because of its body color, but because of the color of its mouth. They are the 2 nd longest venomous snake in the world and before antivenins were produced their bites were 100% fatal. Slide 1
