Parts of an Ecosystem RGrade 8 RScience R9/4/07 RGrade 8 RScience R9/4/07

Parts of An Ecosystem RAll Ecosystems have two major “parts”. RAbiotic or nonliving parts RBiotic or living community RAll Ecosystems have two major “parts”. RAbiotic or nonliving parts RBiotic or living community

Abiotic RThe abiotic part of an ecosystem can be explained as the physical environment that makes up the ecosystem. Examples include; rocks, soil type and chemistry, moisture, sunlight, climate, topography, etc. RThe abiotic part of an ecosystem can be explained as the physical environment that makes up the ecosystem. 4 Abiotic RThe abiotic part of an ecosystem is made up of material that was never alive. RAbiotic means “not biotic” or “non living” RThe abiotic part of an ecosystem is made up of material that was never alive. RAbiotic means “not biotic” or “non living”

Abiotic effect on the Ecosystem RAs you can imagine the abiotic part of the ecosystem has an enormous effect on the biological community. (What animals and plants will be found there)

Abiotic Discussion Point RCan you think of any examples of how the abiotic or physical environment effects the type of animals found there?

Field Study RToday we will take a trip to a pond ecosystem to examine and take observations on the physical environment that helps form the pond ecosystem. RWorking with a partner you will record your observations on topography, exposure to sunlight, water depth, temperature and chemistry, soil texture and chemistry. 8 Field Study After you receive your map of the pond. Locate your spot and record your observations. Using the two beakers you will be given collect a water sample and a soil sample.I will demonstrate proper technique on location. We will do a pH test on the samples back in the class room.
