R. Henderson 9/23/07 Lesson # (A) Now to Him who is able to establish you is able - dynamai - "to be able, to have power," whether by virtue of one's own ability and resources, Vine see Rom. 8:38-39, Rom14:4 to establish - stērizō - "to fix, make fast, to set", is used of "establishing" or "stablishing" (i.e., the confirmation) of persons Vine see Rom. 1:11, 1 Thess 3:11-13 Now, to the One who is of power to establish you (Wuest)

R. Henderson 9/23/07 Lesson # (1) according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, This is the first aspect of God’s establishing you gospel - euangelion - originally denoted a reward for good tidings; later, the idea of reward dropped, and the word stood for "the good news" itself. Vine my gospel is also found in Rom. 2:16 and 2 Tim 2:8 How did Paul learn about the gospel ? see Gal 1:11 preaching - "a proclamation by a herald", denotes "a message, a preaching" (the substance of what is "preached" as distinct from the act of "preaching"), Vine see 1 Cor 2:4 and 1 Cor 15:14

R. Henderson 9/23/07 Lesson # (2) according to the revelation of the mystery This is the second aspect of God’s establishing you revelation - apokalypsis - "an uncovering" (akin to reveal, to uncover, to unveil). mystery - mysterion - In the NT it denotes, not the mysterious (as with the Eng. word), but that which, being outside the range of unassisted natural apprehension, can be made known only by Divine revelation. Vine What is the mystery ? see Eph. 3:1-7 the Gentiles are fellow heirs fellow members of the body, fellow partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel

R. Henderson 9/23/07 Lesson # (a) which has been kept secret for long ages past, This is the first aspect of the “revelation of the mystery” has been kept secret (in the perfect tense) secret - sigao - signifies - "to keep secret;" in the Passive Voice, "to be kept secret," Rom. 16:25, RV, "hath been kept in silence.” Vine also see Luke 9:36 long ages past (or in times eternal) according to the uncovering of the mystery which during eternal times has been kept in silence (Wuest)

R. Henderson 9/23/07 Lesson # (b) but now is manifested, and by the Scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the eternal God This is the second aspect of the “revelation of the mystery” but now is manifested, - by (through) the Scriptures of the prophets, - according to the commandment of the eternal God manifested – phaneros - "open to sight, visible, manifest", to make known what has been hidden or unknown but now has been made known through prophetic writings according to the mandate of the eternal God (Wuest) in contract to the silence

R. Henderson 9/23/07 Lesson # (c) has been made known to all the nations, leading to obedience of faith; This is the third aspect of the “revelation of the mystery” What was made known, to all the nations ? What does “obedience of faith” mean? obedience - hypakoē (hypo, "under," akouō, "to hear"), is a listening under to God via His word. see Rom. 1:5 - 7 (Hal Molloy 10/23/05) - Obedience proceeds out from faith as a direct result or fruit - Chronologically & logically faith comes first, then obedience or yielding
