1 Which grouping of the three phases of bromine is listed in order from left to right of increasing distance between bromine molecules? 1. gas, liquid, solid 2. liquid, solid, gas 3. solid, gas, liquid 4. solid, liquid, gas Which 5.0-milliliter sample of NH3 will take the shape of and completely fill a closed milliliter container? 1. NH3(s) 2. NH3(l) 3. NH3(g) 4. NH3(aq)

3  What are the three states of matter we talked about yesterday?  Now, behold  Solid Liquid Gas

4  Heat, kinetic energy, and temperature: What’s the difference?  HEAT: the transfer of energy WITHOUT performing work or transferring matter Heat flow: where, when, and why?  KINETIC ENERGY: the energy of motion What has high KE? What has low KE? Does KE depend on mass?  TEMPERATURE: the average kinetic energy of a substance Does temperature depend on mass?

9  Do you add or subtract energy to make the metal soft enough to shape?  What two phases is the metal starting to transition between when heated?  What is that called?  After shaping, the blacksmith plunges the sword into water. Is energy entering or leaving the sword?  Bonus: If energy is leaving, where does it go? If energy is entering, where is it coming from?  Say the sword was liquid when it went into the water and solid when it came out. What do we call this process?
