7 HFST Requirement- (Aggregates)  Use of calcined bauxite  Hardness, durable polish resistance  Compatibility with epoxy polyester resin  Availability- Cost  Sufficient Bond- Loss of aggregates  Estimated life 7-10 years ODOT Demo Projects- AID- STIC grants 7

8  Co-chaired by ODOT Executive Director and FHWA, DA  Members- Different stakeholders, different task force and committees  STIC approved a $53, to ODOT for a demo project of HFST chat ( aprox-2000 SY pavement area) 8

9  Tar Creek, Superfund Site, Chat – Flint Aggregates  Tri- State Mining District (Lead- Zinc) (Mid 1800s to 1970)  Chat mining waste- Dry process- Wet Process (Chat- Tailing- sand/ silt)  EPA- recommends the use of chat for transportation (Encapsulate)  Un-encapsulated use have some potential to cause damage to human health or the environment 9

10  EPA has determined the following uses of chat in transportation construction- Not likely to present threat to human and environment.  HMA, WMA cold mix asphalt road surface, road base, different seals coats, epoxy bridge and antiskid surfacing.
