Characterization of fly ash generated from Bakreswar Thermal Power Plant Dr. Arabinda Mondal Department of Silpa-Sadana, PSV, Visva-Bharati, Sriniketan. 11/01/20131Dr. Arabinda Mondal, Assistant Professor, Department of Silpa-Sadana, PSV, Visva-Bharati

What is Fly Ash? Fly ash is finely divided residue generated in the combustion of powdered coal and transported by the flue gases and collected by electrostatic precipitator. 11/01/20132Dr. Arabinda Mondal, Assistant Professor, Department of Silpa-Sadana, PSV, Visva-Bharati

Classification of Fly Ash According to ASTM C Class F fly ash 2. Class C fly ash 11/01/2013Dr. Arabinda Mondal, Assistant Professor, Department of Silpa-Sadana, PSV, Visva-Bharati3

Fly ash – Hazards to Environment and Life Fly ash contains trace amounts of toxic metals like Th, Cr, Pb, Hg, Cd, Mn, Cu, Co, As, etc., which may have negative effect on human health and on plants. 11/01/2013Dr. Arabinda Mondal, Assistant Professor, Department of Silpa-Sadana, PSV, Visva-Bharati4

Physico-chemical properties of Bakreswar fly ash Particle size: µm Surface area: 75 m 2 /g Specific gravity: 2.11 pH value: Carbon content: 0.59 % 11/01/2013Dr. Arabinda Mondal, Assistant Professor, Department of Silpa-Sadana, PSV, Visva-Bharati5

Chemical analysis of Bakreswar fly ash OxidesWt% SiO Al 2 O CaO3.50 Na 2 O 3 +K 2 O1.50 Fe 2 O LOI0.73 MgOTrace SO 4 Trace 11/01/2013Dr. Arabinda Mondal, Assistant Professor, Department of Silpa-Sadana, PSV, Visva-Bharati6

X-ray Diffraction analysis on Bakreswar fly ash 11/01/2013Dr. Arabinda Mondal, Assistant Professor, Department of Silpa-Sadana, PSV, Visva-Bharati7

Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of Bakreswar fly ash 11/01/2013Dr. Arabinda Mondal, Assistant Professor, Department of Silpa-Sadana, PSV, Visva-Bharati8

Conclusion From the compositions of fly ash sample, it can be concluded that the fly ash sample belongs to ASTM class F. Fly ash particles are almost totally spherical in shape, allowing them to flow and blend freely in mixtures. Pozzolanic properties of fly ash can be identified by presence/absence of calcium oxide. So class F fly ash is the weak in pozzolanic as very less amount of calcium oxide present. 11/01/2013Dr. Arabinda Mondal, Assistant Professor, Department of Silpa-Sadana, PSV, Visva-Bharati9

Prospects of Bakreswar Fly ash Utilization 1. Production of building materials Portland fly ash cement Portland cement clinker Sintered fly ash aggregate for concrete Lime fly ash bricks Clay fly ash building bricks 11/01/2013Dr. Arabinda Mondal, Assistant Professor, Department of Silpa-Sadana, PSV, Visva-Bharati10

2. Road and air field pavement construction Fly ash in road construction Embankment Lime fly ash concrete Cement fly ash concrete Lime fly ash soil stabilization 11/01/2013 Dr. Arabinda Mondal, Assistant Professor, Department of Silpa-Sadana, PSV, Visva-Bharati 11

3. Filler material in the reclamation of land and in mining 4. Plant nutrient 5. Manufacture of paints 6. Preparation of domestic cleansing powders 8. Manufacture of rubber and plastics as filler 10/01/2013Dr. Arabinda Mondal, Assistant Professor, Department of Silpa-Sadana, PSV, Visva-Bharati12

8. Development of Fly Ash Based Polymer Composites as Wood Substitute 9. Manufacture of Different ceramic wares Roof tiles (glazed/unglazed) Glazed floor and wall tiles Manufacture of Sanitaryware 10. Ceramic fibers, decorative glass, contineous casting mould powders, etc. 11/01/2013Dr. Arabinda Mondal, Assistant Professor, Department of Silpa-Sadana, PSV, Visva-Bharati13

Thank you 11/01/2013Dr. Arabinda Mondal, Assistant Professor, Department of Silpa-Sadana, PSV, Visva-Bharati14
