Ibrahim Peace be upon him

About prophet Ibrahim Father of the prophets One of Ulu al-Azm (The prophets of resolution) ألو العزم من الرسل خليل الله (of special status with Allah) – only him and prophet Muhammad PBUT He was mentioned in 73 places in the Quran

His early life Again, humanity returned to Shirk He was in north Iraq (Babylon) – great city at the time

Relate to them the account of Abraham إِذْ قَالَ لِأَبِيهِ وَقَوْمِهِ مَا تَعْبُدُونَ when he said to his father and his people, ‘What is it that you are worshiping?!’ They said, ‘We worship idols, and we will go on clinging to them.’ He said, ‘Do they hear you when you call them? Or do they bring you any benefit, or cause you any harm?’ They said, ‘Rather we found our fathers acting likewise.’

He said, ‘Have you regarded what you have been worshipping, أَنْتُمْ وَآبَاؤُكُمُ الْأَقْدَمُونَ you and your ancestors? They are indeed hateful to me, but the Lord of all the worlds, الَّذِي خَلَقَنِي فَهُوَ يَهْدِينِ who created me, it is He who guides me, وَالَّذِي هُوَ يُطْعِمُنِي وَيَسْقِينِ and provides me with food and drink, وَإِذَا مَرِضْتُ فَهُوَ يَشْفِينِ and when I get sick, it is He who cures me; وَالَّذِي يُمِيتُنِي ثُمَّ يُحْيِينِ who will make me die, then He will bring me to life, وَالَّذِي أَطْمَعُ أَنْ يَغْفِرَ لِي خَطِيئَتِي يَوْمَ الدِّينِ and who, I hope, will forgive me my iniquities on the Day of Retribution.’ Ashua’ara 26:69-82

And mention in the Book Abraham. Indeed he was a truthful one, a prophet. When he said to his father, ‘Father! Why do you worship that which neither hears nor sees, and is of no avail to you in any way? Father! Indeed a knowledge has already come to me which has not come to you. So follow me that I may guide you to a right path. Father! Do not worship Satan. Indeed Satan is disobedient to the All-beneficent. Father! I am indeed afraid that a punishment from the All-beneficent will befall you, and you will become Satan’s accomplice.’

He said, ‘Abraham! Are you renouncing my gods? If you do not relinquish, I will stone you. Keep away from me for a long while.’ He said, ‘Peace be to you! I shall plead with my Lord to forgive you. Indeed He is gracious to me. I dissociate myself from you and whatever you invoke besides Allah. I will supplicate my Lord. Hopefully, I will not be disappointed in supplicating my Lord.’ Maryam 19:40-48

Seeking forgiveness for the non- believers The Prophet and the faithful may not plead for the forgiveness of the polytheists, even if they should be [their] relatives, after it has become clear to them that they will be the inmates of hell. Abraham’s pleading forgiveness for his father was only to fulfill a promise he had made him. 1 So when it became manifest to him that he was an enemy of God, he repudiated him. Indeed Abraham was most plaintive and forbearing. Attawbah, 9:114-115

His people would associate partners with Allah They would build their gods, then worship them

During a celebration, they presented food to the Gods, and then went to their party

Ibrahim had a plan. While his people were away at the celebration, he went to the house of the Gods He asked… Why aren’t you eating? They he destroyed all of them, except the biggest and left the tool he used with him

Ibrahim on trial They had a suspicion that Ibrahim did this They asked him: who did this? He answered: The biggest, why don’t you ask them? They said: you know they don’t talk!!!

They started to think But Shaytaan whispered to them, and their arrogance took over them So they decided to burn him alive!

Building the fire Everyone started gathering wood They built a fire, a huge one It was so big that if a bird flew over it, it would fall dead immediately

But there was a problem The fire was so hot…. They could not push Ibrahim into the fire So they had to come up with a solution…

Put your self in prophet Ibrahim’s shoes All he wanted to do is guide his people He care about them deeply And showed them the proof Yet they would not listen to him And they wanted to punish him in the harshest of ways What was his reaction? Despite all this, no one believed in him

The words of Ibrahim Allah is sufficient for me, and he is the best one to rely on

The story from the Quran Certainly We had given Abraham his rectitude before, and We knew him إِذْ قَالَ لِأَبِيهِ وَقَوْمِهِ مَا هَٰذِهِ التَّمَاثِيلُ الَّتِي أَنْتُمْ لَهَا عَاكِفُونَ when he said to his father and his people, ‘What are these images to which you keep on clinging?’ They said, ‘We found our fathers worshipping them.’ He said, ‘Certainly you and your fathers have been in manifest error.’ They said, ‘Are you telling the truth, 1 or are you [just] kidding?’ He said, ‘Rather your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, who originated them, and I am a witness to this. By Allah, I will devise a stratagem against your idols after you have gone away.’

So he broke them into pieces, —all except the biggest of them— so that they might come back to it. They said, ‘Whoever has done this to Our gods?! He is indeed a wrongdoer!’ They said, ‘We heard a young man speaking ill of them. He is called “Abraham.” They said, ‘Bring him before the people’s eyes so that they may bear witness [against him].’ They said, ‘Was it you who did this to our gods, O Abraham?’ He said, ‘Rather it was this biggest of them who did it! Ask them, if they can speak.’ Thereat they came to themselves and said [to one another], ‘Indeed it is you who are the wrongdoers!’ Then they hung their heads. [They said], ‘You certainly know that they cannot speak.’

He said, ‘Do you then worship, besides Allah, that which cannot cause you any benefit or harm? Fie on you and what you worship besides Allah! Do you not apply reason?’ They said, ‘Burn him, and help your gods, if you are to do anything!’ We said, ‘O fire! Be cool and safe for Abraham!’ They sought to outmaneuver him, but We made them the biggest losers. Alanbiya 21:50-70

An-Namrood When the Namrood – one of the kings at the time head of the story of Ibrahim, he called for him A conversation occurred between them:

The king asked: who is your God? Ibrahim PBUH answered: he’s the one that gives life and death The king said I do too Ibrahim replied with something that would baffle the king

The story of the king in the Quran Have you not regarded him 1 who argued with Abraham about his Lord, because Allah had given him kingdom? When Abraham said, ‘My Lord is He who gives life and brings death,’ he replied, ‘I [too] give life and bring death.’ Abraham said, ‘Indeed Allah brings the sun from the east; now you bring it from the west.’ Thereat the faithless one was dumbfounded. And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing lot. Albaqarah 2:258

His migration to Sham No one believed in Ibrahim except his wife Sarah and Loot PBUH The people there used to worship the stars He called them to the worship of Allah in a unique way, pretending to be one of them!

Story with the worshipers of the stars in the Quran Thus did We show Abraham the dominions of the heavens and the earth, that he might be of those who possess certitude. When night darkened over him, he saw a star and said, ‘This is my Lord!’ But when it set, he said, ‘I do not like those who set.’ Then, when he saw the moon rising, he said, ‘This is my Lord!’ But when it set, he said, ‘Had my Lord not guided me, I would surely have been among the astray lot.’ Then, when he saw the sun rising, he said, ‘This is my Lord! This is bigger!’ But when it set, he said, ‘O my people, indeed I disown what you take as [His] partners.’ Indeed I have turned my face toward Him who originated the heavens and the earth, as a ḥanīf, and I am not one of the polytheists.’

His people argued with him. He said, ‘Do you argue with me concerning Allah, while He has guided me for certain? I do not fear what you ascribe to Him as [His] partners, excepting anything that my Lord may wish. My Lord embraces all things in [His] knowledge. Will you not then take admonition? How could I fear what you ascribe [to Him] as [His] partners, when you do not fear ascribing to Allah partners for which He has not sent down any authority to you? So [tell me,] which of the two sides has a greater right to safety, if you know? Al-Alnaam 6:75-81

The king of Egypt No one believed in him again, so he decided to migrate to Egypt The king of Egypt hear that there is a very beautiful lady who entered his land Commanded them to bring her If the man with her is her husband, they were to kill him

So the men came and asked his who he was, he said – I’m her brother; meaning in Islam and to save his life They took her, and both of them started making dua They brought her in front of the kind He wanted to reach for he and touch her She made sincere dua to Allah to protect her…

Allah SWT paralyzed his hand She became afraid that the king and his people will kill her for this, so she called on Allah that he regain his strength So he reached again, and Allah SWR paralyzed his hand again This time he asked her – leave me alone, and so she made Dua and Allah answered

And this happened a third times, and he asked her, leave me and I will let you go Then he said “you didn’t bring me a human, you brought me a Shaytaan” He let her go, and gave her money and gifts so she would leave him He also gave her a maid-servant also – Hajar, as a gift

They went back and found Ibrahim PBUH praying, and he asked what happened They decided to go back to Palestine, now the three of them – worshipping Allah Ibrahim longed for a son… and we will talk about this next time

Birth of Ismael Ibrahim PBUH reached 80’s Ibrahim wanted a child Sarah saw this, and so she allowed Ibrahim PBUH to marry Hajar Hajar gave birth to a son – Ismael PBUH Sarah asked that Ibrahim not keep them both in the same place

The command comes Allah tests Ibrahim again, and commands him to take Hajar and Ismaeel to a barren land He took them and traveled many days He reached a valley with no people, plants, water or any other resources There he left them For the parents amongst us – think of this – imagine leaving your child locked out for 5 minutes, or a few hours, what about days, weeks, months in a barren land with no one!

Leaving his family He started walking away Imagine what Hajar is thinking!!! “where are you leaving us? No water, no food, no people” He didn’t turn back and did not respond What is Hajar thinking now?

The conversation! She asked: Did Allah command you of this? He said: Yes She said: Then he will not betray us That’s true Iman! The confidence in Allah – even though she probably could not imagine how they could possibly live in this land without dying in a few days

The Dua of Ibrahim Our Lord, I have settled some of my descendants in an uncultivated valley near Your sacred House, our Lord, that they may establish prayer. So make hearts among the people incline toward them and provide for them from the fruits that they might be grateful. (Ibrahim, 14:37)

Resources running out Whatever food and water they brought with them ran out. And Ismaeel PBUH as a baby started to cry! Imagine her feelings at this point, she’s being tested!

Looking for resources She started looking for food/water To obtain an advantage point, she climbed a hill near by, but she didn’t find anything So she left it to head for another hill, and at the same time keeping her eye on Ismaeel Between the two hills, there was a depression where she could not see Ismaeel – so she started jogging

The run between the two hills She didn’t find anything on the second hill And by this time, she was far from her son… so she headed back to the first hill – and again, jogging when she couldn’t see Ismaeel She was so desperate looking for anything to eat or drink, she did this 7 times! What are there two hills called?

Two hills What are these hills called? – Safa and Marwah What is the significance? – We go between them in Umra and Hajj, and jog in the area where she did (for men)

The gift of water As she reached the 7th trip to the second hill, she heard a sound… and was quiet to listen She head a sound by Ismaeel She ran toward Ismaeel … and there was the big surprise! Water by the feet of Ismaeel Allah SWT sent Jibreel to strike the earth and allow for this water to come out

The gift of water She arrived and was so happy! She was afraid she would loose the water. So she started digging and making a pool for the water, and saying zam, zam (meaning collect, collect) The prophet PBUH said: – May Allah have mercy on the mother of Ismaeel, if she hadn’t collected, it would have been an oasis, and it would have ran like a river They started drinking from it

Zam-Zam The well is 21 meters from the Ka’abah 11-18 Liters/minute (imagine for all these years) Best water In it is cure from disease The prophet’s heart was washed with it Sunnah to drink from it after Tawaf and before Sa’ee and when finished with the manasik From the Adab: to face the Qiblah, and say Bismillah before, and to drink it over 3 times, and drink from it till you’re full and thanking Allah after and sitting while drinking

A tribe passing by Around the same time, a large dam was destroyed in Yaman So the tribes that depended on it started to disperse Jurhum was such a tribe that headed north looking for water They saw some birds flying around the valley of Makkah They sent a man or two to explore the area

The answering of Ibrahim’s Dua They came and were surprised… A women and a child next to a water well, with nothing else They asked her (and they were a tribe of good characters), do you allow us to live next to you and drink from this water? She said: yes, but for a fee They agreed, and now she had a tribe living next to her Allah answered the Dua of Ibrahim, and instead of Hajar looking for people and food, everything came to her!!! If you trust Allah, he will not leave you lost

The raising of Ismaeel This tribe spoke Arabic! Ismaeel PBUH was raised amongst them – and learned Arabic, and was the one with strongest, most fluent language Ismaeel PBUH grew up and Ibraheem PBUH used to visit them once or more every year

The great test As Ibrahim PBUH was visiting Ismaeel (and he was a young man), he saw a dream He saw a dream that he is slaughtering his son a son that he waited so long for – and his only son And he knows that the dreams of prophets are truth “wahy” meaning they are from Allah – but this is not like a direct revelation from Allah through Jibreel or direct conversation with Allah Now what was the response of Ibrahim PBUH? – Did he say… I’ve been such a good servant all these years, why is Allah testing me? What did I do? No…. – Instead, he was immediately and completely obedient without asking any questions!

Conversation with his son So he told his son Ismaeel of this, and said “I have seen in my dream that I should slaughter you, so see what you think” Ismaeel PBUH said “oh father, do as you are told, you will find me inshaAllah from the patient” Why did Ibrahim ask his son? – To share the reward – Honesty between father and son – For Ismaeel to know exactly what he’s getting him self into – Ismaeel said “you will find me, by the will of Allah, from the patient” – being humble, and relying on Allah

The preparation Ismaeel told Ibrahim PBUT – when you are ready to slaughter me, turn my face toward the ground – so you don’t see my face And Ibrahim PBUH took a stroke with the knife, but it did not cut (just like the fire did not burn) And Ibrahim started pressing more, and Ismaeel said: oh father, harder – but a knife can’t cut without the will of Allah To the parents amongst us… can you imagine pricking your child with a needle?

The call Oh Ibrahim, you have believed and implement the dream (meaning you were successful in the test) This is the “clear test” – the great test! And he was replaced with a great ram And so the Sunnah of Ibrahim PBUH is preserved – and yearly we slaughter in Eid

The story in the Quran And when he reached with him [the age of] exertion, he said, "O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you, so see what you think." He said, "O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast." And when they had both submitted and he put him down upon his forehead, We called to him, "O Abraham, You have fulfilled the vision." Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good. Indeed, this was the clear trial. And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice – Assaffaat 37: 102-107 فَبَشَّرْنَاهُ بِغُلَامٍ حَلِيمٍ فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ مَعَهُ السَّعْيَ قَالَ يَا بُنَيَّ إِنِّي أَرَىٰ فِي الْمَنَامِ أَنِّي أَذْبَحُكَ فَانظُرْ مَاذَا تَرَىٰ ۚ قَالَ يَا أَبَتِ افْعَلْ مَا تُؤْمَرُ ۖ سَتَجِدُنِي إِن شَاءَ اللَّهُ مِنَ الصَّابِرِينَ فَلَمَّا أَسْلَمَا وَتَلَّهُ لِلْجَبِينِ وَنَادَيْنَاهُ أَن يَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ قَدْ صَدَّقْتَ الرُّؤْيَا ۚ إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِي الْمُحْسِنِينَ إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهُوَ الْبَلَاءُ الْمُبِينُ وَفَدَيْنَاهُ بِذِبْحٍ عَظِيمٍ

Ibrahim the Generous Man Ibrahim PBUH like with all the prophets was a very generous man, and for every meal he would eat, he would try to find a guest to feed One day, he found 3 strange men in town They didn’t have any sign of travel! He invited them for food, and chose a healthy fat calf, and roasted it for them.

When he presented the food, they would not eat! Ibrahim PBUH was surprised… why are they not eating, and felt afraid They stated “don’t be afraid, we were sent to the people of Loot (PBUH)” More about the people of Loot later on Sarah, his wife was standing, and she smiled when she heard the news

They gave her glad tidings: You will have Ishaq, and after him, will his son – Yaqoob She was shocked and said: “Shall I give birth while I am an old woman and this, my husband, is an old man? Indeed, this is an amazing thing” They said, "Are you amazed at the decree of Allah ? May the mercy of Allah and His blessings be upon you, people of the house. Indeed, He is Praiseworthy and Honorable."

And certainly did Our messengers come to Abraham with good tidings; they said, "Peace." He said, "Peace," and did not delay in bringing [them] a roasted calf. But when he saw their hands not reaching for it, he distrusted them and felt from them apprehension. They said, "Fear not. We have been sent to the people of Lot." And his Wife was standing, and she smiled. Then We gave her good tidings of Isaac and after Isaac, Jacob. She said, "Woe to me! Shall I give birth while I am an old woman and this, my husband, is an old man? Indeed, this is an amazing thing!" They said, "Are you amazed at the decree of Allah ? May the mercy of Allah and His blessings be upon you, people of the house. Indeed, He is Praiseworthy and Honorable.“ – Hood (11:60-73)

Has there reached you the story of the honored guests of Abraham? When they entered upon him and said, "[We greet you with] peace." He answered, "[And upon you] peace, [you are] a people unknown. Then he went to his family and came with a fat [roasted] calf And placed it near them; he said, "Will you not eat?" And he felt from them apprehension. They said, "Fear not," and gave him good tidings of a learned boy. And his wife approached with a cry [of alarm] and struck her face and said, "[I am] a barren old woman!" They said, "Thus has said your Lord; indeed, He is the Wise, the Knowing.“ – Atharyaat (51:24-30)

Building of the Kabah On one of his visits to Makkah to visit Ismaeel, Ibrahim shared that he has a command from Allah – Ismaeel immediately said – do what Allah instructed you to do He was instructed to build the Kabah And they started building the Kabah (some narrations indicate that there was a building there before)

Building the Kabah One of the corners needed a rock of a specific shape, so Ibrahim PBUH instructed Ismaeel to go look for an appropriate rock Ismaeel PBUH didn’t find an appropriate rock, and when he came back, he saw a white rock in place (no white rocks in the area) Ismaeel PBUH asked: who brought you this rock? Ibrahim PBUH answered - Jibreel did, from Jannah But prophet Muhammad PBUH informed us that the sins of people made it black “Alhajar Al-aswad”

Makam Ibrahim When the building was too high, Ibrahim PBUH asked Ismaeel to bring a rock for him to stand on. When he did, his feet left a mark – and this is mentioned in the quran – “Makam Ibrahim” With the years, the mark was erased – but the rock is still there and people built a foot-like imprint

And call for Hajj Ibrahim PBUH was instructed to call people for Hajj Ibrahim said – oh Allah, what will my voice reach, he was told, you have to call and we will convey He climbed the mountain of Arafah, and started calling people All the people heard that call – and Allah put in the heart of people the love of his house they responded

And [mention, O Muhammad], when We designated for Abraham the site of the House, [saying], "Do not associate anything with Me and purify My House for those who perform Tawaf and those who stand [in prayer] and those who bow and prostrate. And proclaim to the people the Hajj [pilgrimage]; they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel; they will come from every distant pass – Al-Hajj 22(27-28)

The dua of Ibrahim in the Quran And [mention] when We made the House a place of return for the people and [a place of] security. And take, [O believers], from the standing place of Abraham a place of prayer. And We charged Abraham and Ishmael, [saying], "Purify My House for those who perform Tawaf and those who are staying [there] for worship and those who bow and prostrate [in prayer]." And [mention] when Abraham said, "My Lord, make this a secure city and provide its people with fruits - whoever of them believes in Allah and the Last Day." [ Allah ] said. "And whoever disbelieves - I will grant him enjoyment for a little; then I will force him to the punishment of the Fire, and wretched is the destination." And [mention] when Abraham was raising the foundations of the House and [with him] Ishmael, [saying], "Our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed You are the Hearing, the Knowing. Our Lord, and make us Muslims [in submission] to You and from our descendants a Muslim nation [in submission] to You. And show us our rites and accept our repentance. Indeed, You are the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful. Our Lord, and send among them a messenger from themselves who will recite to them Your verses and teach them the Book and wisdom and purify them. Indeed, You are the Exalted in Might, the Wise."

Lord, show me how you resurrect And [mention] when Abraham said, "My Lord, show me how You give life to the dead." [ Allah ] said, "Have you not believed?" He said, "Yes, but [I ask] only that my heart may be satisfied." [ Allah ] said, "Take four birds and commit them to yourself. Then [after slaughtering them] put on each hill a portion of them; then call them - they will come [flying] to you in haste. And know that Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.“ – Albaqarah 2:260

There was no doubt in Ibrahim’s mind at all But he wanted to see this – go from “knowing” to “seeing”
