Mikkelsen, ITPA Transport & Confinement Topical Group Workshop, Milan October 2008 Validation of ITER Simulation Models ITER requests help to validate transport models for scenario simulation. 'Transient' phases – I p ramp-up and -down – are of particular concern. The maximum 'stress' on the control systems occurs in transient phases. No attention has been paid to the transient phases in confinement studies. These have higher q and different l i than is common in 'flat top' phase. Ramp-down may well differ from ramp-up because l i will differ Modelers in the Integrated Operation TG are comparing with experiment. Kessel requests guidance: 1) what global scaling is appropriate for high q ohmic and low P aux ? could be used to re-normalize local transport models. 2) what transport models are appropriate for high q ohmic and low P aux ?

Ohmic and low P aux are there. what  E scalings work well? Kaye NF '97: No q dependence In ohmic  E scaling. Could recast L-mode scaling in terms of q, but are proper q(r/a~0.6) available? McDonald '07 No ohmic scaling at all. Again, could form q from B, I p, a, R terms in scaling.

Some low P aux ? Could we resurrect this effort to look at ohmic/low P aux plasmas? Could also test TGLF - or is it still under development? Do we have ohmic/low P aux plasmas in the Profile Database? is ohmic phase data trustworthy? Some ohmic data was of primary interest? Could we get new data sets with 'full transport diagnostic coverage' ? current data sets don't have MSE? no fluctuation diagnostics? ITER demonstration discharges are well documented?
