2 Relationships in Faust Times  Many men married younger girls in Faust times  It was common for many reasons: -Socially acceptable - Parents encouraged it - Financially well off

3 Relationships Today  Men still marry younger women in today’s society  Laws against minors getting married  Marrying younger is looked down upon more today  This is an illegal act

4 Why did men marry younger in Faust Times?  Younger girls and women could reproduce more  They were pure and innocent  More naïve and gullible  Easily taken advantage of

5 Why did Faust pursue after a young girl such as Gretchen?  She had youth and was pure  Could want to recapture his youth  Vulnerable

6 Why did Gretchen choose an older man such as Faust?  He was dependable  Faust had convincing aspects  He had age and experience  He was persistent on showing her love (in the beginning)

7 What are the effects of these types of relationships?  Many of these relationships never end well  Some are known to end in tragedy, such as this one.  Young girls are often left alone to fend for themselves. -many end up pregnant  Can split families

8  Not all families agreed with relationships such as this  In Faust, Gretchen’s brother did not agree with Faust and Gretchen’s relationship  Her brother believed that she was committing sin  He believed she would be unholy and not be able to marry in the future.

9 Example from the text: “There’ll come a time, and this I know, All decent folk will abhor you so, You slut! That like a plague-infected Corpse you'll should be shunned, you be rejected They’ll look at you and your heart will quail, Their eyes will all tell the same tell You’ll have no gold chains or jewelry then, Never stand in church by the altar again Never have any pretty lace to wear At the dance, for you’ll not be dancing there! 10  From that text you see how Faust and Gretchen’s relationship caused family problems  This was one of many that were caused by their relationship  This text also shows how some people thought of young girls who were put into these situations
