2 SAFETY GUIDELINES THE COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING IS TAKING SAFETY SERIOUSLY PLEASE SUPPORT THE COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING EFFORT TO STRENGTHEN OUR SAFETY AWARENESS, INSURE PROPER TRAINING AND PREPARE THE STUDENTS FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER IN VARIOUS INDUSTRIES IN TODAY’S WORKPLACE ENVIRONMENT YOU WILL TYPICALLY FIND A ZERO TOLERANCE RULE FOR UNSAFE ACTS PROTECT YOURSELF, OTHERS AND YOUR JOB BY ADOPTING A PERMANENT SAFETY-THINKING 2

3 PERSONAL SAFETY YOU HAVE THE PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR SAFETY SAFETY GLASSES AND CLOSED-TOE SHOES MUST BE WORN IN ANY LAB, EXCEPT COMPUTER LABS ( HTTPS://ENGR.UNCC.EDU/COLLEGE/SAFETY-POLICY-LABS ”SAFETY GLASSES ARE MANDATORY IN ALL LABS WHERE MATERIAL IS BEING MIXED, HEATED, MODIFIED, OR OTHERWISE MANIPULATED” ) HTTPS://ENGR.UNCC.EDU/COLLEGE/SAFETY-POLICY-LABS CONSUMPTION OF FOOD OR BEVERAGES IN LABORATORIES IS FORBIDDEN EMERGENCY (24 HOURS)-(704) (POLICE AND PUBLIC SAFETY DISPATCH) NEVER WORK IN A LABORATORY ALONE. MUST HAVE AT LEAST ONE OTHER PERSON IN THE LAB WITH YOU 3

4 GENERAL LABORATORY SAFETY KEEP AISLES CLEAR (32” MIN.), 36" IN FRONT OF ELECTRICAL PANELS MAINTAIN ACCESS TO ALL EXITS, EYEWASHES, FIRE EXTINGUISHERS AND EMERGENCY SHOWERS DO NOT USE CORRIDORS FOR STORAGE OR WORK AREAS GAS CYLINDERS WILL BE MOVED AND INSTALLED BY STAFF PERSONNEL 4

5 CHEMICAL SAFETY ALL CHEMICALS MUST BE CLEARLY LABELED WITH THE SUBSTANCE NAME, CONCENTRATION, DATE, AND NAME OF THE INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBLE USE VOLATILE AND FLAMMABLE COMPOUNDS IN A FUME HOOD INSTRUCTORS, RESEARCHERS AND LABORATORY MANAGERS MUST ENSURE THAT STUDENTS ARE PROPERLY TRAINED IN THE SAFE HANDLING AND DISPOSAL OF CHEMICALS INCOMING CHEMICAL ORDERS MUST BE INSPECTED BY KNOWLEDGEABLE PEOPLE. IF YOU ARE NOT SURE, ASK! 5

6 SAFETY AUTHORITY SHOULD ANY ISSUES ARISE WITH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF SAFETY, YOU WILL BE SUPPORTED BY LABORATORY MANAGERS, INSTRUCTORS, THE DEPARTMENT CHAIRS AND THE DEAN OF THE COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING SAFETY CAMERAS ARE IN OPERATION IN MOST LABS DO NOT HESITATE TO LET US KNOW OF ANY SAFETY PROBLEM IMMEDIATELY 6

7 SREU PARTICIPANTS AND MENTORS PLEASE BE AWARE OF THE SAFETY REQUIREMENTS FOR OUR LABS. THE SREU HANDBOOK CONTAINS LINKS TO OUR SAFETY INFORMATION, BUT WE WOULD LIKE TO STRESS THE FOLLOWING: SHOES CLOSED TOE SHOES MUST BE WORN AT ALL TIMES IN THE LABORATORIES. SANDALS PROVIDE LITTLE PROTECTION FROM SPILLS, BROKEN GLASS, OR FALLING OBJECTS. SANDALS ARE NOT ALLOWED EYEWEAR SAFETY GLASSES ARE MANDATORY IN ALL LABS WHERE MATERIAL IS BEING MIXED, HEATED, MODIFIED, OR OTHERWISE MANIPULATED. (COMPUTER "LABS" ARE NOT CONSIDERED MATERIAL LABS.) SAFETY GLASSES ARE AVAILABLE IN THE BOOKSTORE. IF SAFETY GLASSES ARE PURCHASED ELSEWHERE THEY MUST CONFORM TO FEDERAL SAFETY STANDARD ANSI Z87.1. MOST PRESCRIPTION GLASSES DO NOT MEET THIS STANDARD. BOTTOM LINE: SAFETY GLASSES AND CLOSED-TOE SHOES MUST BE WORN IN ANY LAB, EXCEPT COMPUTER LABS. 7
