Surrey Countryside Access Forum LOS Sub Group May 2012 Gaps in the Rights of Way Network (2026 cut off date) Author: Avril Sleeman 1

Where Daniels Lane in Warlingham (BOAT 176) leads into a bridleway where it ceases to be a metalled track. Where BW 589 leads to the junction with FP 582 on Farleigh Common. 2

Where a ROW leads into an unclassified road. In Caterham FP 18 leads into Willey Lane, a residential unmade up road which is not part of the highway network. 3

Butterfly Walk (BW 85) in Warlingham leads into an unadopted road that is not a public road, as does the FP39. 4

BW 161 in Caterham leads onto Dome Hill Peak which is not a public road. 5

Park Ley Road (Woldingham) has remained a “private” road but is still ridden and walked. Portley Wood Road (Caterham) has refused to allow riders in spite of a Council sponsored horse ride joining the road at two points. 6

An example of a Town Path which is on the LOS but NOT on the Definitive Map is the path from Crowborough Close to Sunnybank in Warlingham. 7

In order to research the extent of the problem in Surrey we can use the Interactive Map. 1) Google in “Surrey County Council Interactive Map” 2) Click on Surrey County Council Interactive Map 8

3) Click on “term and conditions” 9

4) Click on “View the Interactive map (I accept terms and conditions)”. The map will now load 10

5) We will have to decide how many of the SCAF are willing to help and divide up the County. As an example let us divide it into Districts. On the right side of the map click on “Your council” then tick “District” then click “Refresh button at top of right side. 11

6) Let us take Mole Valley as an example. Click on ”zoom in” on left side of map and then with pointer draw a square round Mole Valley. 12

7) Let go and the map will zoom to that district. 13

8) Zoom to a starting point, say a square near Headley. 14

9) Now click on “Roads and Transport “ on right of map and tick footpaths, bridleways, byways, restricted byways and the road network. Now click on “refresh map”. This then shows where all the ROW and public roads are and reveals the gaps and anomalies (if any). 15

To move the map, click on “move map” and slide the map with the point away from the direction you which to investigate next. Let go of the mouse and wait. 16

If you find an anomaly (such as the BOAT 44 leading to FP 44) then you may need to zoom in again to find the path numbers. 17

Any Questions? 18
