OUR PROPOSAL TO DONORS PROJECT PROPOSAL: INTRODUCTION OF THE DEPARTMENT OF ISLAMIC STUDIES DEGREE PROGRAMME EXECUTIVE SUMMARY ASUM MANAGEMENT is proudly presenting the degree program in Islamic studies. The program will be taken concurrently with one of the secular courses as elaborated in this proposal. The goal is to produce graduates who shall have acquired both secular and religious knowledge. The program will offer an integrated package cutting across social life and tailor made towards shaping the moral build up of the students.
BACKGROUND The degree in islamic studies shall be taken in parallel to one of the following secular courses: 1. Information technology /Computer science 2. Financial accounting 3. Business management 4. Marketing 5. Purchasing & Supply INTRODUCTION ASUM shall operate the Institute at Chitedze and the Institute shall be having the BEST facilities, which means professionals to train our under privileged children. This shall allow us to have facilities of such an Institute in Malawi and not sending children out of the country.
MISSION STATEMENT ASUM wishes to produce EDUCATED MUSLIMS for the FUTURE of Muslims in MALAWI. We lack Muslim professionals in many major fields and our vision is to have our children taking leading positions in the future. DEGREE IN ISLAMIC STUDIES ASUM proposes to introduce a degree program in Islamic studies. Refer to appendix 01 for course outline. The program will be taken concurrently with one of the secular degree courses offered by the College. At the end of the four years of study at ASUM, a student will be able to get a degree in Islamic studies and another degree in any of the secular courses. He is Islamically equipped with the degree he attained in the secular field and can go forward in the manner he desires.
JUSTIFICATION OF THE PROPOSAL Out of the 11 million people in Malawi more than 4 million are Muslims. There are quite a number of Islamic primary and secondary schools but unfortunately no Islamic institution of high learning has been established and this to some extent deprives the Muslims from international opportunities to be employed as Arabic interpreters. ASUM provides full boarding within the campus for those students enrolled for the degree in Islamic studies at affordable and subsidized fees. It is from this background that ASUM thought of annexing the department of Islamic studies to its existing courses offered to give an opportunity to Muslims and those who want to learn more about the perfected religion and its teachings and customs. Apart from the objectives of ASUM for quality education, the institution also believes in shaping the morale behavior of the community for both individual and society development.
MARKET ANALYSIS Looking at the population of Muslims in the country, the introduction of the program would meet the needs of the Muslim community. MONITORING AND EVALUATION There shall be a system of monitoring and evaluating activities in the Department of Islamic studies to see to it that the aims and objectives of the course are achieved. Use of classic reports that will be produced on monthly basis is one of the best methods of evaluation. Furthermore, lecturers will be required to submit progress report periodically, and such reports shall be submitted to the respective authorities. CONCLUSION ASUM believes that the introduction of the department of islamic studies is a new chapter in the history of Malawi more especially in the education sector. The course will help to boost the morale behavior of Malawians which is the best ingredient of economic, social and political development of the country. Malawi does not need highly qualified manpower but also manpower which is responsible to the society. The course therefore, is viable and needs to be supported.
