THINGS REMEMBERED and THINGS FORGOTTEN---by a certain rich man.
Things Remembered and Things Forgotten~!! Luke 12: And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: 17 And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? 18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.
19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. 20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? 21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.
What was this man’s problem? Answer: He was a fool..
1. Not because he was rich. It is not a sin to have money and possession, its our misuse of them that becomes sin.
This rich man’s problem: 1. He thought within himself…(about himself) a) His thinking was about himself b) He wanted what would make him At ease. He forgot the brevity of life. He forgot God He forgot the purpose in living. He was thinking of me, myself and I. And ‘right now’ and not about the hereafter.!
He was already rich…what more did he need himself. He wanted a life time of ease for himself. Yet, his life was less than 24 hours…’this night’ shall your soul be required of thee, and then whose shall all these things be… The Bible is full of warnings about failing to using this life to prepare for that which is to come.
1. Heb. 9:27 ; Eccl. 9:5 ; Eccl. 12: This day…is used a lot in the bible..Luke 23:43.. Today, And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise...Matt. 6:11 Give us this day our daily bread
A Lot Can Happen in One Day
Nebuchadnezzar: Daniel 4: All this came upon the king Nebuchadnezzar. 29 At the end of twelve months he walked in the palace of the kingdom of Babylon. 30 The king spake, and said, Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honour of my majesty? 31 While the word was in the king's mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, saying, O king Nebuchadnezzar, to thee it is spoken; The kingdom is departed from thee. 32 And they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field: they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and seven times shall pass over thee, until thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will.
Daniel 4: The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hairs were grown like eagles' feathers, and his nails like birds' claws. 34 And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honoured him that liveth for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation: 35 And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?
Daniel 4: At the same time my reason returned unto me; and for the glory of my kingdom, mine honour and brightness returned unto me; and my counsellors and my lords sought unto me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added unto me. 37 Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven, all whose works are truth, and his ways judgment: and those that walk in pride he is able to abase.
God’s People are told: Deut. 30: I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live: 20 That thou mayest love the Lord thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which the Lord sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.
Deut. 29:29 29 The secret things belong unto the Lord our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.
He remembered the Wrong things and Forgot the Right ones!
#1 He Remembered HIMSELF! First Person Singular… Look at the parable: ‘5’ times he says “I” ‘4’ times ‘my’ or ‘mine’ He remembered “HIMSELF”…. cf. Lk. 18: 10 Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. 12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. 5 times he says “I”…. Beware of this attitude:
2 Tim. 3:1-5 1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. lovers of their own selves 2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, 4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; 5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
ME, MYSELF AND I !
#2 He remembered this temporary world. V.19 Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years: take thine ease, eat, drink and be merry.” His thoughts were all about his comfort In this present world. Rich man and Lazarus… Luke 16:19-31 ‘Comfort for this life…eternal torment forever.” What a contrast!
Luke 16: There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: 20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, 21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; 23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. 25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. 26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.
27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: 28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. let them hear them 29 Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. 30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. 31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.
#3 He Forgot what the Source of Real Joy is in life… Phil. 4:4; Jesus: Acts 20: 35 I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.
Someone has said: “Those who bring sunshine into the lives of others cannot keep it from their own lives.”
Prov. 19:17 17 He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again. Or as in another version: “He or she who is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and will be rewarded for what he or she has done.” Matt. 5:16
Remember: The giving of a glass of water in the name of a disciple shall not be forgotten by the Lord Mark 9: 41 For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward. Gal. 6:10
Remember: “The best things in life are not things!” Someone has commented: “America has more things than any other nation in the world—and at the same time more books on how to find happiness”.
#4 The next Right thing this farmer forgot was Time! In verse 19 “I have plenty of good things laid up for many years!” He had plenty of good things laid up for many years, but what was missing ? (I Have for Me…) Someone else’s.
James 4: Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: 14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. 15 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.
Matt. 16:26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
#5 He Forgot GOD G O D
The first thing he should have remembered was GOD..but did not even remember him at all!! His idea was ‘my fruits’; ‘my barns’ Where did it all come from? GOD Are we like that? Forget the hand that Feeds us. James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
Someone is quoted as having said: “He had dollars but no ‘sense’ because he disregarded the Almighty!” I Chron. 29:12 “ Both riches and honour come of thee, and thou reignest over all; and in thine hand is power and might; and in thine hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all.
Abraham Lincoln in 1863 “ To help our nation avoid this mistake, Abraham Lincoln designated April 30 as a day of national humiliation, fasting and prayer. He said: “Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self- sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us. We have grown in numbers, wealth, and power as no other nation has grown, but we have forgotten God.” I wonder what Abraham Lincoln would Say about America today??
Prov. 3:9-10 “9 Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: 10 So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.
We must never forget GOD! Ecclesiastes 12:1-7 Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them; 2 While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain: 3 In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened,
4 And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low; 5 Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets: 6 Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.
Eccl. 12:7 7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.
Someone has inscribed the following: Go give to the needy sweet charity’s bread For giving is living,” the angel said. “And must I be giving again and again?” My peevish, petulant answer ran. “Oh, no,” said the angel piercing me through, “Just give till the Master stops giving to you” Author unknown
The rich farmer had it all…he thought… Yet he never enjoyed it, never had time for it, Never had time for his ease. “This day shall thy soul be required of Thee…’this day’ …It is coming for all Of us.
