7 Suggested School Teams: Colorado School Safety Resource Center  Building Safety Planning Team  Responsible for the building safety plan including outlining all emergency actions/response protocols.  Assesses physical safety of the building (interior & exterior)  Plans for psychological safety of students & staff i.e. establishes other teams, arranges for team trainings, school climate considerations and prevention programs  Documents and assesses after any drills or real incidents  Building Crisis Team  Holds an Incident Command Structure (ICS) role  Trained to respond in a crisis to fulfill that role  Threat Assessment Team  Multidisciplinary team trained in threat assessment according to school policy  Psychological Recovery Team  Mental health professionals trained to identify and provide follow-up interventions for students and staff after a building crisis

10 Scenario Colorado School Safety Resource Center  School officials learn on Sunday that a seventh grade student has died in a car accident on Saturday evening.  No other students were involved.

12 Organizing a School Crisis Response  Upon learning of a crisis the building principal would:  Verify the information/identify family liaison  Notify 911 (if appropriate) & district administration  Call together the building crisis team  Consider consultation with law enforcement to avoid interference with ongoing investigation  Devise a plan of action for the school: Colorado School Safety Resource Center

13 Organizing a School Crisis Response  Identify victims & secure personal belongings  Decide what type of response is appropriate: grief, trauma or both  Make initial notification to staff and announcement of before and after school meetings the day of the crisis response  Hold a staff briefing  Mobilize the media liaison  Write statements for phone inquiries  Assess security needs Colorado School Safety Resource Center

14 Organizing a School Crisis Response Colorado School Safety Resource Center  Prepare written announcement for staff to relay info to students  Assess need for outside assistance  Notify other schools/organizations that might be impacted  Compile a list of possible at-risk students  Organize a SafeRoom, supplies & activities  Initial planning for memory activity  Have follow-up resources identified and available, include these in notification to parents

15 Organizing a School Crisis Response Colorado School Safety Resource Center  Prepare notification(s) to be sent home to parents/guardians including tips for helping their children cope, policy for attendance at funerals, follow-up meetings at school and resources, etc.  Prepare plans for follow up: rest of the week, day of the funeral, interventions necessary beyond the drop-in center remember needs of at-risk students, general population and ALL staff.  Meet with school staff at the end of the day  Meet with SafeRoom staff at the end of the day  Visit the family
