1 Grade 9 Lesson 5 Sat Vocab Mrs. Janice Blaber

2 Jaded (adj)  Kaipo became jaded about love after the third girlfriend in a month broke up with him.  She was jaded about fundraisers after the last one she gave money to was reported to be a big fraud.

3 Jaded (adj)  Worn out; dulled

4 Gist (n)  I never did understand the gist of his story.  At the end of each set of Cornell notes, students must write a gist of the notes.

5 Gist (n)  The main point

6 Efface (v)  He tried to efface his memories of her by burning all of her pictures.  Vandals like to efface property by spray painting it with black paint.

7 Efface (v)  To obliterate; to wipe out

8 Charisma (n)  The candidate had charisma and good looks, but little knowledge of the important issues.  Shrek is an ogre, but he isn’t a bad one.

9 Charisma (n)  Personal appeal or attraction; magnetism

10 Ogre (n)  The ogre terrorized the villagers in the mountain village.

11 Ogre (n)  A brute; a large monster; a frightful giant

12 Mesmerize (v)  The fast music and spinning dancers mesmerized the audience.  Many teenagers become mesmerized by reality tv shows that they often foregt to do their homework.

13 Mesmerize (v)  To hypnotize

14 Entity (n)  Ann thought she saw a ghostly entity hovering over the graveyard, but it turned out to be a flag.  The entity seen flying over the school at midnight turned out not to be a UFO, rather it was a 747.

15 Entity (n)  Anything having existence, either physical or mystical

16 Bandy (v)  Let’s not bandy words about the deal anymore; just sign the papers and leave, please.  Many times, during AR periods, Se’a likes to bandy with her neighbor rather than read; she often gets in to trouble for this.

18 Advocate (v)  She advocated to raise money for breast cancer because she believed in finding a cure for it.  The teacher advocated for all students to do community service if they wanted to better humans.

20 Dastardly (adj)  The dastardly thief stole money only from the helpless, elderly people.  The dastardly store owner raised all the prices on his water bottle by 500% when he found out that he was the only person who sold fresh water in the poor town.

21 Dastardly (adj)  Cowardly and treacherous
