3 To say “It is well…” is learned Phil 4:11 Outward circumstances don’t determine “wellness” Eccl 9:11-12 Life can be like a river gently gliding by OR sea billows boisterously rolling over When peace like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll, Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, “It is well, it is well with my soul.” VERSE 1

4 When peace like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll, Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, “It is well, it is well with my soul.” VERSE 1 It takes no faith, character to quit, even blame God when bad circumstances invade our lives Ruth 1:20-21 Job 2:9 It takes faith, depth of character to say “It is well” in bad times Job 1:20-21 2:10

5 We “…fall into trials” Jas 1:2 Satan buffets us continually Job 1-2 Mt 4:1-11 Lk 13:16 Yet, he cannot affect the “controlling assurance” of Christ’s death Heb 2:14-15 Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come, let this blest assurance control, That Christ hath regarded my helpless estate, and hath shed His own blood for my soul.” VERSE 2

6 Christ has indeed “regarded our helpless estate” We were in a “terrible plight” Rom 5:6, 8 Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come, let this blest assurance control, That Christ hath regarded my helpless estate, and hath shed His own blood for my soul.” VERSE 2

7 There is no more resplendent thought than complete forgiveness of sin Heb 8:12 Humans sometimes re-open “old wounds” that supposedly were allowed to heal Not so with God, His forgiveness My sin – O the bliss of this glorious thought – my sin, not in part, but the whole, Is nailed to His cross, and I bear it no more, Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul.” VERSE 3

8 Through Jesus’ death (and our response to it), our sin problem has been totally removed Heb 10:1-4 My sin – O the bliss of this glorious thought – my sin, not in part, but the whole, Is nailed to His cross, and I bear it no more, Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul.” VERSE 3 Previously, a reminder of sin Not so any longer

9 Only 1 day when we can ultimately say, “It is well…” Ù the day of Christ’s return Man mocks this certainty 2 Pet 3:3-9 Our attitude should be, “Lord, haste this day” We want faith to become sight cp. 2 Cor 5:7 And Lord, haste the day when the faith shall be sight, The clouds be rolled back as a scroll, The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend, Even so, it is well with my soul.” VERSE 4

10 Let signs accompanying His triumphant return happen NOW 1 Thess 4:16-17 And Lord, haste the day when the faith shall be sight, The clouds be rolled back as a scroll, The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend, Even so, it is well with my soul.” VERSE 4

21 Conclusion Notice the emphasis is “soul”… not “life” Things can go wrong in life and the soul can still be “well” No matter what happens to us, we should still be able to say with confidence, “It is well with my soul” cp. 2 Cor 4:7-18 Can you say it is well with your soul?
