Malala Yousafzai and Human Rights
Watch the following YouTube clip of Malala talking to American TV host, Jon Stewart, on The Daily Show.YouTube clip What is so incredible about her response to the Taliban’s threats against her? Why is she prepared to put her life at risk? If this was you, do you think you’d be able to respond in this manner?
Malala is a passionate promoter of everyone being allowed an education. According to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 26 is being breached when someone is denied this right. Read through the Article and identify where educational rights are being breached with regards to Malala’s story.
Article 26.I Everyone has the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages. Elementary education shall be compulsory. Technical and professional education shall be made generally available and higher education shall be equally accessible to all on the basis of merit.
Article 26.II Education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and to the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. It shall promote understanding, tolerance and friendship among all nations, racial or religious groups, and shall further the activities of the United Nations for the maintenance of peace. Article 26.III Parents have a prior right to choose the kind of education that shall be given to their children.
Activity Choose either an issue or current news event which focuses on a situation in Africa to look at, see the next slide for examples. Now, read through the sheet that lists all the articles found in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. With regards to your chosen event, which articles are being violated as a result? Can you identify why?
