Clinical Documentation: Challenges & Resources for Boards of Examiners Cynthia Vaughn, D.C., F.I.C.C. Past President, Texas Board of Chiropractic Examiners

Is Documentation a Problem? YES! Everyone knows about the OIG report What has been done? Kicking and screaming ACA’s Clinical Documentation Manual, Editions One and Two FCLB passed a Resolution Task Force formed

Is Documentation a Problem? Hot off the presses: There are 2 reports due any day that are STILL very negative for chiropractic More of the same will probably not yield a different result We need to show that SOMETHING new/different is being done

How did this happen? Chiropractic care is a “hybrid” Chiropractors are a bit lazy & don’t take the time to learn coding A lot of MIS-information out there How many times have we ourselves heard blatantly incorrect statements made during programs? Dynamic system: Rules constantly (and some of the most significant changes loom on the horizon) Seasoned DCs want to consult and teach

Okay, so….how do we fix it?

Chiropractic Education Clinical Documentation Manual adopted as part of many college’s curriculum Proper abbreviations and symbols being taught from the outset Proposal: NBCE to develop testing of clinical documentation as part of their Parts I-IV examinations

Seminars Kathy Mills Chang – “Accurate & Appropriate Clinical Documentation for Chiropractic Care” DC Seminars – John Schmidt, D.C. Gregg Friedman, D.C.’s “Got Documentation?” Chiro Code Seminars & Webinars Mario Fucinari, D.C.’s “Documentation & Compliance” (NCMIC sponsored)

Seminars (cont’d) OnlineChiroCredits.com ACA’s “Proper Clinical Documentation” Google it! And…..drumroll, please….

Seminars (cont’d) ACA’s Webinar on Medicare Documentation!!! Go to: www.acatoday.orgwww.acatoday.org Flashes in the right upper corner Comprehensive program, complete with voice-over audio Essentially a 2 hour program

Seminars (cont’d) Ability to “bookmark” and return later Test at the end – wrong answers, you get a 2 nd attempt (shhhh…no one fails!) Once test is passed, ability to print a certificate for proof of completion It’s GOOD! ACA has resources to keep it current and correct It’s FREE!

Future Plans ACA is presently developing similar webinars for other aspects of Clinical Documentation These are in DRAFT FORM

What are the Challenges? Boards hesitant to “mandate” specific topics for relicensure Selection of the “right” program (PACE help?) College curriculum already pretty full Development of new test questions in whole new area of examination Resistance to this whole process by profession

Actual program examples
