1 Create multiple or varied teaching and learning options based on… Interests Current skills or Experience with concept Learning Profile or Areas of Intelligence Content Process Products Key Concept or Understanding Differentiation Udvari-Solner, 2007 – Adapted from Tomlinson

2 Principles of Universal Design Universal design is the design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design. Ron Mace This principle applied to Curriculum: It’s better to build flexible options into the curriculum at the outset rather than trying to retrofit the program after it has been established. Assessment, Curriculum, & Instruction are designed from the beginning to allow participation of the widest range of students. From Architecture & Engineering To pedagogy and curriculum

3 The Universal Design Process Facts About Your Learners Content (WHAT STUDENTS LEARN) Multi-level Academic & Social Goals Multi-sensory Materials Process (How students engage In learning ) Lesson Formats Instructional Arrangements Environmental Conditions Student-Specific Teaching Strategies Systems of Support Products (How students demonstrate & convey their learning) Multi-level Assessment & Criteria Alternative Forms of Grading Enduring Understandings & Central Questions Acceptable Evidence REVISED AND EXPANDED FROM: Udvari-Solner, 1995; Udvari-Solner, Villa, & Thousand, 2005

4 Differentiation Decision Points ContentContent –Multi-level goals/objectives –Multi-level & Multi-sensory materials ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ProcessProcess –Lesson Formats –Instructional groupings –Environmental changes –Student Specific Teaching Strategies –Natural systems of support~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ProductsProducts –Varied Authentic Products –Varied Grading criteria and systems Student specific educational priorities. Materials that best convey concepts & content. Types and levels of texts, visual material, adaptive devices, assistive technology. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ How students engage in learning. The approach or structure for learning the content. How students are grouped or configured. Changes in the physical set-up, instructional positioning, & social/cultural rules of the classroom. Prompts, cues, questioning techniques, & instructional approaches that match student’s learning needs/ How support & supervision will be provided by teacher, peers, specialists ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The learning outcomes & how they will be assessed. Options for students to show their knowledge in varied ways, student- specific grading approaches. Universal Design Process – Udvari-Solner, 2005©
