1 Unit Plan Erin Seickel ARE

2 2D Elementary: Forming Self After looking at Hochberg’s work students will consider questions about the subjects of these paintings. What are their names? What is their favorite subject in school? How do they spend their time? What are they feeling Students will then consider those same things about themselves and plan a self-portrait of themselves in an environment that reflects these qualities. Students will also include a written statement about what they are communicating about themselves through their self portrait.

6 3D Elementary: Found Object Drawing Students will look at Paik’s work and think about the ideas of taking a found object and visualizing it as something else. We will discuss what is added to Paik’s work by the fact that it is created out of found objects. Observational drawing using Linderman’s drawing method. Found object drawing to communicate a message.

9 Misc. Primary: Journals As Art Students will look at examples of journals as art. They will set goals for art this year (techniques, mediums, content, etc.). They will make a list of ideas for exploration through their work. They will create a drawing in their sketchbooks based on something that is important to their lives right now.

16 2D Secondary: Communicating a Message Students will look at Kruger’s work and discuss what kinds of messages are being communicated. First Impressions: Which piece has the strongest impact on you? Describe: What elements and principles are present in this piece that make it so effective? Analyze: Is it a strong message? How would the message change if changes were made to the visual design. Judge: Rate how strongly the message is portrayed and if the overall visual of the piece is cohesive. Students will select one of Kruger’s pieces that means the most to them and plan a 2D design based on the same content. The students will create a 2D design in using the medium of their choice to express their views. A professional class critique will occur of the day the prjects are turned in.

20 3D Secondary: Cai Guo Qiang We will discuss the conversationalist content and the use of movement in Qiang’s work. Student’s will research a conservation issue that is important to them. Based on their research and our in class discussion of Qiang’s techniques the students will create a dynamic sculpture out of clay.

23 Misc. Secondary: Street Art Research Students will examine the works of Chase, Gerada, and Roadsworth. We will discuss street art and how it is crossing over into galleries and museums. We will make a list of criteria that a piece must have for it to be considered street art versus illegal graffiti. Students are assigned an art research assignment to go out and find one example of street art and one example of graffiti. They must write a two page paper comparing the two works they found, measuring them against the criteria list we created as a class.
