Presentation Template: Instructor Comments u The following template presents a guideline for preparing a Six Sigma presentation. An effective presentation should be similar in format & length (~10-20 slides), but will obviously vary based on your findings and presentation style. u The italic text in these template slides is instructional and should not be written in the actual presentation. The nonitalic text in these slides presents examples of the kinds of text you can include. Note that some of the example text appears on separate slides within the template. u The examples are based on a case study from Six Sigma: The Breakthrough Management Strategy Revolutionizing the World’s Top Corporations by Mikel Harry, Ph.D. and Richard Schroeder, 2000 in which Polymerland, a division within General Electric’s Plastics Division, applied Six Sigma strategy to solve a problem in shipping its plastic products to its customers. u The information in your presentation should be a subset of your written report. When preparing your presentation, identify and present your key points. Present detailed explanations in your written report. u Feel free to use this PowerPoint template to set up your presentation format style.

Title Stating Topic and Purpose of Presentation Date Presentation is Given Presenters’ Logo (Optional) Name, Title of Presenter Department/Organization of Presenters

Example: Damage-Free Delivery Project: Solving Problems with Products Damaged in Shipping December 15, 1997 Name Unknown, Black Belt Also Name Unknown, Champion Polymerland, A Division of GE Plastics

Overview (1-2 slides) u Project Definition - briefly describe the project. Include: –problem statement, including the defect or variation –current performance of KPOV’s (e.g., CTQ, CTC, CTD) –target performance –analysis, including conclusions –recommendation Note : Current practice supports presenting a brief summary of your conclusions and recommendations in the overview. This approach gives the audience a viewpoint from which to interpret the data you present. Define Measure Analyze Improve Control

Example: Overview Problem Product damage at warehouse. Current Performance –Between 1/1/97 and 6/30/97, 176,381 pounds of the 275,501,855 pounds of product shipped were defective. –A damage-free sigma of 4.72 and a DPMO of 640. Performance Objective Less than 1 DPMO. Define Measure Analyze Improve Control

Example: Overview, cont’d Analysis Determined damage caused by forklift drivers puncturing boxes with forks of forklifts. Recommendation Install shorter forks on forklifts used in warehouses. Define Measure Analyze Improve Control

Process Description (1-2 slides) u Define the problem and identify key areas of concern: Some possible tools include: –Pareto Chart –Cause-and-Effect Diagram –Flow Chart Note: See report template, course notes, or Breyfogle (Chapter 1) for more information. Define Measure Analyze Improve Control

Current Performance (1-2 slides) u Present data from analysis. Possible items to include: –Summary statistics –Process Capability Analysis –DPMO –Rolled Throughput Yield u Emphasize key issues using: –labels and arrows –bold text –shaded text Define Measure Analyze Improve Control

Measurement System Analysis u Verify your measurement system. Use tools such as: –Gage R&R Table Note: See course notes for more information. Define Measure Analyze Improve Control

Target Performance Define performance objectives by comparing your current activity with your target goals in a baseline table. Table would show current performance versus goals Define Measure Analyze Improve Control

Data Analysis (3-5 slides) u Identify causes of defects, sources of variation. Possible analysis to include: –Correlation Studies (Regression) –Statistical Inference Graphics (e.g., box plot, stratification analysis) –Experimental design results (note: try to summarize results using simple graphics such as dot plots or summary tables – ANOVA tables with p-values typically belong in the report appendix. –Process Control Charts –FMEA table Note: See course notes for more information. Define Measure Analyze Improve Control

Sources of Variation u Explain significance of data analysis and how it points to the cause of defects. Define Measure Analyze Improve Control

Alternative Solutions (1-2 slides) u Identify ways to improve performance. –Identify alternative solutions. –Verify alternative solutions meet target goals. Define Measure Analyze Improve Control

Example: Alternative Solutions Possible Solutions u Hire more experienced forklift operators at the Maumee and Piedmont plants. u Train forklift operators in Maumee and Piedmont. u Install shorter forks on the forklifts. Note: The presentation should also show that you verified the alternative solutions meet target goals. Define Measure Analyze Improve Control

Recommendation(s) u Identify specific solution(s) to achieve performance goals: –Specify criteria for selecting solution. –Present conclusions. –Identify chosen solution(s). Define Measure Analyze Improve Control

Example: Recommendation Note: The presentation should specify the criteria for selecting the solution. Replace all 36-inch forks with 42-inch forks at all warehouses. Define Measure Analyze Improve Control

Verification of Findings u Verify recommended solution(s) will continue to succeed. Possible items to include: –Follow-up DPM analysis –Follow-up Process Capability Analysis –Show Control Charts to Demonstrate Process Stability Define Measure Analyze Improve Control

Control Phase  Identify a control plan to insure that system will continue to perform.  Some Examples: –ISO 9000 Control Plan –Tracking system to insure that all special orders are moving through the system. Define Measure Analyze Improve Control

Summary u Briefly recap – problem – process followed to reach solution(s) –conclusions –recommended solution(s) –potential benefit u Briefly explain next steps –actions to be taken –person responsible –schedule Define Measure Analyze Improve Control

Example: Summary Problem –Customers complained of damaged products. –We examined the products and shipping processes at all Polymerland warehouses. Conclusion The length of the forks on the forklifts contributed to damage occurring in shipping. Solution We replaced all 42-inch forks with 36-inch forks. Note: The presentation should also include the specific benefits of adapting the solution and any necessary follow-up actions. Define Measure Analyze Improve Control
